I was confused by what "one civilization away" means.

Well I guess I thought some kind of negative comparison was being drawn between modern (mainly) Western body modification and that which had been practiced for ages by other societies, and I don't really agree with that, but perhaps my takeaway was all wrong,

Ashley, what's your tattoo idea if you don't mind sharing?
pollo, I feel you. I love getting piercings, I love wearing piercings (I've had many over the years), but they're not for everyone. If you don't feel like they belong on you they don't look right. Mine look like this right now:
The lip stud will be smaller both in diameter and length once it's healed. Still, I feel I am at my facial piercing limit. And that's just fine with me. Now, to finish the half-sleeve on my left arm ...
Love it! I'm at my facial piercing limit too (septum + labret).
This is what I'm thinking of getting tattooed (on my wrist).
The typeface is gill sans extrabold display. To me it says graphic design, and writing, and chill out and relax man, take a breath, keep moving (because it's a comma!), and also weird sex acts. The typographer that made it, Eric Gill, is notorious for having kept a diary in which he references awful sexual things he's done, which tickles me in kind of a horrible way. It is also the prettiest comma of all the commas, and doesn't look like a sperm, which is a challenge in the comma world.
I have probably talked about it lptj before.

More like, some societies modify the body one way, some another way. Both think the other looks kinda strange but in actuality they are the same. So when I'm reading about some funky ass shit like footbinding (thankfully, it is no longer practiced) I'm like "Damn, son. That's some weird shit all up in dat culture" but then I think about all the funky ass shit people do to their body in Western culture I'm like "Damn, son. Surgically inserting a silicone blob inside the body is some pretty weird shit" and I come to the conclusion that we are all stardust. But I digress, of course people should do precisely what they want to do with their own body.
x-post: great idea for a tattoo, ash

Ashley, cool tattoo idea! Update: definitely got punched in the face. On the plus side, compliments all around, even from my 70-plus-year-old bosses!

YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOU DON’T THINK THERE’S ENOUGH SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT CLIMATE CHANGE?
BASICALLY, YES. I THINK THERE ARE TOO MANY CONFLICTING OPINIONS WITHIN THE GENERAL ‘CONSENSUS’ AND THAT IT’S FOOLISH TO TRY TO FORCE EVERYONE TO ACCEPT SOMETHING THAT EVEN ‘THE EXPERTS’ CAN’T AGREE ON, LET ALONE CHANGE THE WAY WE LIVE, JUST BECAUSE IT MIGHT BE TRUE. YOU CAN’T ASK EVERYONE TO BASE THEIR ENTIRE LIVES AROUND A HUNCH. IF YOU BELIEVE IT’S HAPPENING, FINE. DO WHAT YOU FEEL IS NECESSARY TO HELP, BUT DON’T START PREACHING TO ME ABOUT IT UNTIL YOU’VE GOT SOME COLD, HARD, IRREFUTABLE FACTS.
THAT’S INCREDIBLE. YOU JUST SUMMED UP MY ENTIRE OUTLOOK ON RELIGION IN TWELVE SECONDS.
You see a fun one every once in a while

How is that incredible? The same guy is writing both those characters. That's not how humor works.

sockpuppet1: how can one character say "incredible" to another character when they are both written by the same person?!?!?!

Got a flat on the drive home tonight. I'm parked on a frontage road near the Berkeley marina, and would be pissed if I hadn't realized it's the perfect time of dusk, when only the planets and nearby stars are visible. Right now it's just me, the Bay, some freeway noise, and Venus, Jupiter, and Sirius.
EDIT: It's 30 min later, and that's not Sirius. My starmap app for the iPhone says it's Capella, the brightest star of Charioteer, which I didn't even know was a constellation.

That would never happen to me. Whenever I get a flat, I call AAA immediately, then get high while I wait. By the time they show up I've got no clue what the fuck they're doing to my car.
This time, my tire was apparently out of alignment. Which probably comes from hitting curbs when I'm high.

Well that attempt to dye my hair was a resounding failure! It's just a reddish brown at the roots like a nice coloured horse, and still dark at the rest of it. And I was going for a dark ash blonde! I'm so sick of my fuckin hair!

Folks with piercings and/or tattoos, have you noticed any change in the culture such that more people are getting both, where before folks tended to gravitate chiefly toward one or the other?

Piercings aren't much of a thing here in Athens, but tattoo popularity is through the roof. Most heavily-tattooed Athenians are not also heavily pierced.

Most of the people I know with tattoos do not have piercings, but if a person I know has a bunch of piercings then they are probably also tattooed.
