I don't know exactly, but it's pretty clearly mental illness of some sort, which is sort of what I assumed from the beginning. If you look in the comments on that Secretly Canadian article, his aunt says he's not ready to receive any fan mail yet.

Was he known as a junkie? It sounded like that to me, or that and a combination of pretty severe mental health issues. Which makes sense.

I know some folks that have worked with Jason in the last couple years right before this all went down, and guys, I don't think that the junkie talk is warranted. But that's all I really feel comfortable saying right now. I feel confident that he'll be okay sooner or later.

Hope so. That bloke has written some amazing songs.

Did you know that the 2000 film Me, Myself and Irene's soundtrack consists almost entirely of astoundingly inept covers of Steely Dan songs? Boy, I sure didn't!

I knew that! it's absolute crap for the most part, but probably still the best thing about that movie.

except maybe the scene where Jim Carrey's pee stream splits in various directions, I do recall lol'ing at that in the $2 second-run theater where I saw it.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I think 2011 has been a damn fine year for new music.

Yeah, I don't know. I've got 10 or 11 really excellent albums, about the same number of good plus ones, and a further 10 or 15 that I like but may not be listening to in a year or two. Of course, we're likely talking about different albums for the most part.

I agree. The last couple of months in particular.

My favorite part is when Jim Carrey, in his psychotic persona, sings along with "Motherfucker" by the Dwarves.

"No group in history can have been so woefully misunderstood - Half Man Half Biscuit are, in fact, an antidote to wackiness, a bulwark against zaniness. Fiercely principled, highly literate, sometimes very close to angry, these are songs of open defiance; their real targets, more often than not, are stupidity as a leisure option, the hollowing-out of British culture, the slow death of the post-war settlement."

Brilliant piece on HMHB by Taylor Parkes in The Quietus.

Question

What do you mean. Does that site have a reputation? I'm not really familiar with it, to be honest. But that article is about 20 times more insightful than anything else I've read about that band.

I'm not sure if that's what davy means, but I think the Quietus has been singled out for being shitty and pretentious on these boards before. I find it to be one of the most consistently interesting music sites around, for what it's worth.

Yeah.

I don't read everything on there, far from that, but every week I find at least three or four worthwhile reviews or pieces, and I like the simple and uncluttered design.

Thanks for the intro. I know nothing of HMHB and now I'm hungry for some.

Though I'd have liked the article better if Parkes stopped halfway through. He makes all kinds of great points about Blackwell's lyrics, but he pushes it too far. Of course I say this having never heard HMHB.

You guys don't remember that atrocious Orange Juice article?! Short memories!

I mean, I've only read a little of what's on that site, but it's always been "Pitchfork: Year 4"-level pretentious. Pitchfork thought they were the coolest, The Quietus thinks they're the smartest.

But like I said, small sample size, etc etc.

(Seriously though, that Orange Juice article is the single worst piece of rock criticism I've ever encountered.)
