For the record you and your bf are welcome to crash on my couch for the low low price of a personalized shark drawing
?
I was like "MAKE A SHARK WITH A BEARD AND ALSO VIKINGS" but I did not have access to a picture of you so this is the best he could do. I am still not going to Lollapallooza but consider this a You Should Buy Me A Drink The Next Time I Am In Chicago card.
If anyone else needs a personalized shark he really loves drawing these, and was totally amused by the whole story.

Queen: Prog rock, rock-rock, or something else? Arguments are being had over here.

all the above, and then some? By which I mean, it'd be hard to argue against some of their stuff being prog, and it'd be hard to argue for some of their other stuff being prog, and some of their stuff rocks near as hard as anything has ever rocked, and some of their stuff rubs shoulders with disco, and then of course there was the 80s, sooooooo.......

Kind of glam too. Classic rock? Is that something?

Actually, I'm with Nick here. Glam and classic are the two that ring truest to me. I don't really get the prog, but maybe that was an earlier phase? I mean, I get that A Night at the Opera is a crazy record that covers a lot of genres, contains virtuosic guitar playing, and defies easy classification -- all proggish traits -- but none of the songs actually sound like prog to me.

Hey ella, Popmatters just put up a feature about potential/deserving Polaris Prize nominees. Looking forward to digging in...

Nick, or Whit, or anyone else - have you heard the new album by Owen Ashworth, formerly of Casiotone For The Painfully Alone?
Advance Base - A Shut-In's Prayer
I gave it one listen and was disappointed, but then again I was not paying attention to the lyrics. Seems to be a direct continuation of
Etiquette
musically, but nothing really jumped at me and a few songs, like "Christmas in Oakland" seemed like retreads of older songs. I'm curious to know if anyone has given it more of an actual try, because I really like the guy, terrible band name aside, and perhaps I just wasn't in the mood yesterday.

hmm, no, didn't even know it existed! might investigate, though probably not until the mood is right--his music is definitely not all-purpose, and I'm not quite in the right place for it now (which is a good thing!).
meanwhile, my random moment of the morning was walking with ipod shuffle, hearing the Hold Steady's "Constructive Summer," and realizing for the first time it has a Dillinger Four nod--"me and my friends are like/doublewhiskeycokenoice." never caught that before. and then, miraculously, two songs later Cleveland Bound Death Sentence comes on! (with Paddy from D4).
