L'Avventura! Imagine seeing that in a theatre! I'd have to find elbow length vintage silk gloves, expect a proper usher (what if I pinched his butt?), and sneak in a bag of macaroons (apricot, passionfruit and anise). Happy fantasy! There is no where anywhere close to where I'm living that I could expect to ever screen that film but dare to dream, can't help but pine for a place where I wouldn't be the only member of the audience.

I did realize that it was possibly a bit Euro-centric to assume that it is possible to see L'Avventura or the like in a theatre - I imagine the possibility seldom occurs in North America, but I'm not sure about NZ - if that's the case as well, my apologies!

There were six or seven people at the screening I went to!

Out of the three Antonionis I know (gee, I guess really need to watch Blow Up), I'd avoid Zabriskie Point, and probably, if at all possible, watch L'Avventura and Identification of a Woman in a theatre - they lose quite a bit of their power on the small screen. Also, same as Fellini, the films do tend to drag on a bit.

Yeah I was impressed the impact the big screen had on The Eclipse when I saw it a few months ago.  I had binged antonioni in high school, and hadn't been able to really stand it since, and had kind of decided I was just trying to be cool back then or something.  But in the theater the movie was great.

And in the theater it was me, a little of a few old folks and students, and the guy with no shoes and a plastic bag who seems to go to all the same movies I do.

It's a cold, hard fact that the only people with any taste at all are old people who know, cool kids collecting cool points, and the odd weirdo. Then me. I pray there's more of me, somewhere.

I hope you love Wet Hot American Summer. My friends and I barely go a day without referencing it in some way at least once.

I certainly did! And I can certainly see that this would be something very, very easy to reference all the damn tiime.

I often feel like Wet Hot American Summer is the closure we State fans wanted and needed so badly but never thought would come. It's one of the reasons I love it so much.

I've been saying "yeahhh, welll" a lot lately, then imagining throwing a kid out of a van. I don't think anyone gets it.

A good one I use a lot, and my friend said it yesterday, is "anytime. Lunch, dinner, literally any time."

No, ignore them all! Watch this:

Female Convict Scorpion: Prisoner 701. Maybe not essential, but holy shit, where were you all my life? It's japanese women-in-prison exploitation film that goes anywhere on a whim. Just stare at that poster for 20 seconds and try saying out loud, with a smidgen of honesty in your voice, that you don't wanna see this movie. I know, impossible.
Fuck.  I want to record a concept album inspired entirely by the poster without even seeing the movie.

I saw The 10 tonight, laughter abounds. There's something about the sense of humor of david wain and crew that just slays me.

This Saturday I watched, in one long stretch: A Fistful of Dollars, A Hard Day's Night, Superfly, and Ichi The Killer.

Huzzah for roommate with Netflix!

I've never seen Ichi the Killer!  Somehow!  Would you recommend it?

This past weekend I saw a silent German expressionist film, From Morn To Midnight, with live musical accompaniment by the Alloy Orchestra (featuring Mission Of Burma's Roger Miller on keyboards.)   I ain't no film scholar and I'm sure I missed some details in the plot, but the general story arc was easy enough to follow and I thought the sets and visuals were terrific.  The music was really excellent as well.  Apparently the film is somewhat obscure and had only been screened in Japan before it's recent discovery/restoration.  Good stuff.

Rohmer

La Collectioneuse is my favorite but I've only seen the Six Moral Tales.

Melville

He's never wowed me but he's never disappointed me, so watch whatever, I guess?

Fellini

La Strada is great; La Dolce Vida is great; 8 1/2 is great; Amarcord was dreadful.

Actually just go ahead and watch anything/everything in Meiko Kaji's filmography.

She's a great singer too! The only other film of hers I've seen is Lady Snowblood and indeed that is a fantastic film. She has a way of looking otherworldly cool in pictures.

Man, I hated Bronson.  I actually can't believe I made it to the end.

I didn't!

If you guys hated Bronson, maybe what you need instead is Gumbel.

After having seen some good performances as pedophiles, Kevin Bacon takes the cake for The Woodsman. Mos Def is also good in that, didn't know he could act.

The best film I've seen in a while is [Safe]. Anybody seen that? Todd Haynes film starring Julianne Moore. I got so immersed in its sick little world that I didn't realize how twisted it was until afterwards. Fantastic film.

Man, I loved Melancholia. The perfect counterpoint to The Tree of Life, call it The Tree of Death. I love Von Trier just hatin'.
