Don't go see it. Really, you'll probably not like it.

I'd say you are a tad bit spoiling the movie by saying that. I went into it with a completely clean slate regarding its content and didn't realize it was that kind of movie until about halfway through. but it's being marketed as such so I guess you're not really spoiling.

oh yeah I haven't seen the movie yet my friend just told me the whole plot because he loves it so much and wanted me to see it.

plus I heard somewhere that telling people the ends to things makes them more likely to see or read the thing that you told them the end to.

to be fair, it does open with a scene depicting the end of the world, so there is that.

I had mixed feelings about Melancholia, but my admiration outweighed the qualms. My advice is to forget that Lars Von Trier the human being exists and you're simply watching an authorless film, kind of like you sometimes gotta do with Vincent Gallo.

does anyone here do the thing where you poke around the trash cans, find an empty bag of popcorn and take it up to the front for a free refill without having to buy one?

I've never done that, but during leaner times, I've definitely eaten someone else's leftover popcorn at the end of the movie, when they leave it on their seat.

Babar, what is the salt flavored like?

My problem isn't with Von Trier the human being--I mean, he's a dolt, and a misogynist, but I'm quite easily able to separate my feelings about Von Trier the person and my feelings about his films. Which 9 times out of 10 are oppressive, excessively bleak, misogynistic, and--the thing preventing his films from being good despite/because of those other qualities--lacking any interesting or compelling point of view. Which is probably a pretty uncharitable reading of his work, but that's been my experience. I've read enough about this one, though, to feel like it might actually be interesting to me and have redeeming qualities, unlike, say, Antichrist, which I never bothered seeing, despite the fact that quite a lot of my friends thought it a masterpiece.

I generally alternate behaviors between Germophobe and Gross Person, but this is something that falls on the "wouldn't do" side of the line for me.  Though I'm not a person who has a specific desire for popcorn at the movies anyway.

You guys should get jobs at a movie theater and never pay for popcorn again.

The only downside is you work at a movie theater.

I just watched JCVD and, and it was excellent. A meta action film where Jean Claude Van Damme plays himself, an aging and out of luck movie star, broke and fighting for custody of his daughter. Back in Belgium, he goes into a bank to withdraw some money and ends up in the middle of a robbery and the police outside mistake him for the robber.

Van Damme actually proves that he has some serious acting chops. There's a point where the camera rises, and you can see the set lights and stuff, and he goes into this monologue which is amazing and he is more critical of himself than anyone else could be. It is raw and emotional.

I really just don't like popcorn that much.  If it was free, I might eat it twice during my stint as Movie Theater Employee.

That's pretty much how it goes, except days when you're real real hungry.

I did a year stint as Movie Theater Employee in college. Got tired of popcorn in a couple weeks, but loved that Movie Theater Employee Solidarity that gets you free movies all over town, so long as a movie's not sold out.

I'm not into popcorn enough to purposefully buy it but when a bowl or bag of it is put in front of me I'll grab a few hand-fulls.

I fucking love popcorn.  In fact, one of the big problems I have with it is that I eat so much in a sitting that the following morning I tend to feel less than stellar because I ate too much popcorn because I saw popcorn in front of me and I had to eat that popcorn.

Hey Iggy, now that you're a Movie Theater Employee, can you pull something like this?

we don't have a real marquee Sad

Which is really obnoxious now that I think about it because people always stare all weird through the windows to see the LED sign behind the box office.
