Watching the Nick Cage vehicle Season of the Witch. Most hilarious opening crusade montage of battle scenes ever. REALLY?
LOVED it.

I saw
Synecdoche, New York
last night, and while I didn't hate hate hate it, I didn't like it much either. First 20 minutes or so I felt were pretty engaging, but christ's sake, I wish it had slowed down and stopped trying to
blow my mind
so much. If you're trying to tell an emotional story, you have to let people sit with those emotions a little rather than trying to blindside them with one before moving on to the next without reason or consequence. It's like Kaufman was going "hey, what could I make totally suck for this character next? I know, how bout his dying daughter hates him? How bout the lady he likes likes his double better? How bout we just have PSH cry some more about the weight of the world?"
I dunno, I tend to feel about Kaufman's films that they're
nearly
something I like, they just never quite make it. And that's somehow sadder than them just being straight up bad.
Happier note:
The Red Balloon
! I had the picture book with the film stills when I was a kid, and saw
Flight of the Red Balloon
the other year, but had never actually seen the film itself. Aw yeah it was good. Got that other Lamorisse short,
White Mane
sitting hot and waiting for me.

I think that's what I like about them. I like stuff that gets it wrong just a little bit.

Me too! But Kaufman gets it wrong in a way I find enervating rather than exciting. That's just me though.

yeah, same, synecdoche is probably one of my favourite films - i kind of feel like if he had done what you said, slowed it down and let those emotions dwell, it would have taken away the chaos and confusion that really makes it.

finally got around to this. man, what a piece of shit. i've always thought of david lynch as a style over substance kinda guy, but seriously. this just felt like he threw a bunch of random scenes, each trying desperately to be "creepier" than the last, and tried to string a story out of it. i had absolutely no emotional reaction to anything in the film, and wanted my hour and a half back.

in other movie-related news, i watched two last night (making the most of the gap between my final exams and my army reserve training),
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
and that Joaquin Phoenix mockumentary, whatsitcalled.
the former was a really enjoyable and genuinely funny comedy that didn't quite manage to keep me entertained for 90 minutes, but came close.
the latter was pretty boring really, but i guess they made their point? maybe? the scenes with Stiller and Diddy were hell of funny.

That's funny. I tend to feel that way about Lynch, but I love Eraserhead.

okay, I have resisted Twentynine Palms ever since it came out and looked obnoxious. and yet, somehow the previews on this disc have convinced me to give it a shot, along with Humanite, which I also dodged. in fact, I've never seen anything by Bruno Dumont.
thoughts?
I've been in the same boat as far as 29palms, and still am to some extent, but I saw the new Dumont
Hors Satan
in the theater last night and was stunned. It was like a staggering out of the theater, not able to talk afterwards kind of situation.
I really liked it. It reminded me of living in the country...
(sorry to drag up the old quote, I did a search for dumont...)
So yeah, I loved this

SPOILER for anybody else who hasn't seen the film: Eraserhead is ... not plot-driven.

Brakhage is another one whose stories seem very poorly strung together indeed.

yeah seriously mang. I mean, I love David Lynch's films (except for the couple I haven't seen), but I love Eraserhead for entirely different reasons than, say, Mulholland Drive.

Fun fact: the Moroder cut of Metropolis on the big screen is a really entertaining way to spend 80 minutes.

Man, so Drive was really really great. I loved Valhalla Rising, also, and liked Bronson okay, so I guess Nicholas Winding Refn has now become one of the few directors who I'm likely to follow. Jazzed as hell about the Thailand Western movie he's making next.

You've got his best stuff to go, the Pusher Trilogy. You will be required to read subtitles, sir.
