BIKE EVERY DAY
«
on:
Oct 03, 2011, 11:45:25 AM »
The old thread is at 22 pages but I had to post this pic, from Chicago's lakefront bike path last week. There were some crazy waves and
video on a local news site
of waves crashing over the path and knocking down some bicyclists, then I saw this pic a few minutes ago and thought you'd dig it
Chicago cyclists are hardcore, y'all

I'll be honest, my stress level will have gone down some iota at not seeing donblood's username constantly on the Unread page.

An inspiring
2 min video
of the bike racks at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, shot by a friend on Sat Oct 1. Evidently all that's needed for a petroleum-free city is free music.

Got a major semi for the
Bike Share Program

There's a pretty successful bike share in DC.
Whenever I see someone bike past me on one in standstill traffic I do get a little jealous. I really don't get how they can get away with not providing helmets though...

In New York, there's no helmet law; it may be the same for DC.

Yeah, it's probably and at your own risk and/or you're expected to bring a helmet thing that you agree to when you use the thing. Omaha has a bike share thing in a few parts of town. I haven't used the ones here yet, but I've used the ones in Denver which are all over the place and apparently pretty popular.

Do I have to wear a helmet?
Capital Bikeshare recommends that everyone wear a helmet. You can keep a helmet at work or in your locker. Click here for a list of local bike shops in the District and in Arlington to purchase a helmet, some even offer discounts to annual and 30-day members of Capital Bikeshare!

There are loaner bikes at the hotel we're staying at in Portland, but I think we're going to rent some today.

A neighbor of mine works for Amtrak and makes the Portland run regularly, he's always telling me about the loaner bikes at the hotels. If you stop in at Rogue and see a drunk fat forty-something loud-mouthed redheaded guy with a goatee and a Chicago accent, go up to him and say "Hey, Kerley." On second thought don't 'cause you'll never escape the salival shower of redundant conversation that follows, but it'd be funny.

Man, when I went to New Orleans a couple years back, bike rental was hands-down the best idea of the entire trip. I was able to get anywhere in the city within half an hour, tops.

Back wheel? WTF? Nasty.
I got my bike serviced the other week and rode it home. Sweet. Next time I took it out I discovered I've lost the keys to the D lock/padlock combo I use. Not so sweet at all. I guess it serves me right for not riding for 4 years...the worst thing is that I feel like I've seen them around within that time and thought "oh yeah, I'd better put *them* somewhere safe.

I've got a friend whose wife left him for a bike mechanic. I take his side, of course, but I'd totally run off with a bike mechanic if I were a chick.

I wouldn't. All the ones I know are batshit crazy. Excellent bike mechanics though.
