#occupylptj - new news thread

There are tens of thousands of people in Times Square right now in the biggest display of Occupy Wall Street thus far, and there are reports of the police moving in and threatening to arrest all of them. We might be on the cusp of a moment.

Livestream here:

Police are moving in now, and I'm watching it from New Zealand. What a world we live in.

This is an extraordinary artefact of our world - on livestream I saw some cops threaten a bunch of people with arrest for standing next to the barrier they'd set up, the protestors removing to move (or simply being unable to, given the crush behind them), and a supervisor coming through to defuse the situation. The crowd chant their approval of the supervisor's actions. Then on Twitter it comes through who the supervisor is, and now the crowd chant his name in thanks. All within 10 minutes with nobody moving a yard, but with the information beamed across the world.

From an article about our local Occupy event
Quote
Other passers-by belittled the movement, with its signs and chanting and drum beating.
"That drum was made by capitalists," mumbled a middle-aged man wearing a tucked-in polo.

We went to the Portland protest for a bit yesterday. Everyone was quite friendly. No one in the area seemed much phased by the whole thing.

I was there, pressed against the barricade. There was a pretty fucking horrifying period where the cops were using horses to drive people back. One horse fell over.

I'm gonna be near the Atlanta Occupy site in Woodruff Park on Thursday. There has been some controversy from our camp after group consensus determined that Rep. John Lewis, who showed up asking to address the crowd, was told he'd have to wait until much later to speak. Dude took it gracefully, no hard feelings, and probably would have waited if he didn't have other stuff to do. Still, I think that was kind of a boneheaded move, PR-wise. I haven't been able to follow the Atlanta occupation too closely, but there's been quite a bit of bickering, it seems.

One of my closest friends from high school has been out at Occupy LA most days during the last couple weeks. Crazy exciting.

That is also kind of gimp given that the MLK memorial dedication was this weekend and the fact that Lewis was, you know, actually involved in bringing about sweeping social change through direct action.

Really earlier today I was thinking how this movement needs all of the seasoned, eloquent speakers it can get. The crazy group energy is awesome but you've got to get some people out there articulating ideas because failure to do that means the face of things is an impassioned, well-meaning, but probably really inarticulate unwashed dude.

They had a wall street dude who supports the occupy movement talking on NPR saturday and he summed everything up nicely: The banks didn't live up to their end of the deal and now these people are in "A LIVING HELL."

I'm going out on a limb and calling this the largest Occupy Wall Street protest on any continent - in terms of percentage of population participating.

By the way, people, I know you think the globe's warming up and all, but it's still pretty fucking cold down here. At least the knitters over at Grist have a clue.
Admit it - you want to knit a sweater for a penguin
