This doesn't have to end our internet friendship or anything but my basic political philosophy is less government intervention and more individual liberty and a fortunate result of that is lower taxes. I don't really follow American politics but, with a shallow examination, RP seems to advocate that so I don't think he's crazy. Now of course, preferably there wouldn't be a two-party system where it's either that or the other or you throw your vote away. What I would do is probably throw my vote away towards someone I agree with the most.

Yeah, very little of modern libertarianism has any genuine empirical support.

What Paul's said on the subject is that he would like to eliminate the progressive income tax (and, really, as a libertarian, he just wants to do this out of principle; any macroeconomic benefits he might claim are after-the-fact rationalizations).

Ideally he'd like to replace it with a broad schema of protectionist trade tariffs and taxes. Those may or may not be a good idea, depending on the specifics, but we'd definitely be paying a bunch of WTO fines, and right now exports is one of our economy's few growth areas, sooo.

Lacking the political will for that, he'd implement some version of the FAIR tax. Which means he ain't really want to lower taxes for anyone except the rich.

Which puts him about with the other GOP candidates, but when you view this alongside his proposals to go back on the gold standard (an absolutely insane idea that would result in recession at best, global superapocalypse at worst), and eliminate the Fed (which may or may not be a good idea long-term, depending on how it's done, and who gets the Fed's power, but would certainly cause absolute chaos near-term)... yeah, I mean, the fact that I could marry a dude and smoke a joint isn't going to be much solace when I'm spending my days searching landfills for scraps and hiding from roving rape-gangs
