the thing is, some of the "U.S. Black Metal"tm that's getting made actually isn't so bad but...very little can ever beat a small metal album made by guys who don't realistically imagine anybody outside their scene will ever hear it, and that's exactly what this is

this applies to any kind of album... when you can sense it's being made for friends and feel like part of a close network, when a band feels like >your< jam, does it get any better? some music was never meant to guest star on late night talk shows. i want limited press 7" releases and locals only shows.

reminds me of one of my favorite records this year, made by my friends in portland, sort of a damaged psychedelic krautrock thing. they recorded it two years ago but the whole process got stuck in mastering limbo (a bunch of masters were destroyed at one point also, if i remember correctly; they had back ups but had to redo a lot of work). they finally put it out for free in april as a kind of "fuck it, whatever, our friends want to hear it, we've put all this work into it." it's a real gorgeous thing that i've tried to put other people on but it doesn't really take. it's a really intimate communication of a few years.

Not to derail John's thread, but what was this called, Brad?

it's a self-titled record by a band called swahili. think i mentioned them in some "albums of the year so far" thread.

EDIT: it's no longer freely available but the band have sort of given me the go-ahead to send it to whoever wants it
