Just spun MellowHype's BlackenedWhite a couple times, and it's growing on me. Is this a good thing? Or a trap?

dude, just listen to what you like and don't be concerned about not being cool or meta-cool or whatever stage of coolness we are at now.

I like how Babar's entire presence on this board is to show up periodically and berate us for being insincere hipsters

Yeah, that post could have just as well ended with "FUCK YOU, I'M OUTTA HERE!"

In other news, I just spun Kool G. Rap's latest record, and it's really super great.  Those early records he did with DJ Polo are some of my all-time favorite records, and dude still hasn't lost the touch at all.  "Harmony Homicide" is one of my fave songs of the year, for sure.

Also: RIP Heavy D.

Nothing to do with hipness, dude. Sometimes, you know, what you think is cool turns out to not be cool after the coolness wears off - you know, there's not a refrigerated core of cool - and that's what i'm asking about. Is this cool the kind of cool that stays cool after the usual cool goes away.

If that makes me a hipster, then hipster I am. Just a rather old one.

got ya. basically what you're asking is, will it be cool in retrospect? I don't know. What I do know is that I like BLACKENEDWHITE (yeah, i think it's in all caps) and especially "Hell" and "Loaded". You're wrong about there not being a refrigerated core of cool, his name is Bootsy Collins.

and blucas, you obviously missed my ringtones thread. partytimes were had, i tell you. i may have some leftover dip.

I mean if Odd Future's love of rape and hatred of homosexuals is a problem for you, then yeah, I'd say it's a trap.

OF neither loves rape nor hates homosexuals and BLACKENEDWHITE is more about loving weed and hating cops than the preceding topics, though nobody would really know 'cause I guess you only have to listen to "French" before writing a Slate thinkpiece.

Anyhow, in non-infuriating rap news, I just realized that Heavy D did the beat for Beanie Sigel's "Feel It In The Air", which is an incredible classic.

Odd Future write lyrics in which they talk in positive terms about committing rape, Antero. That is a fact. I know you don't like that fact, but that doesn't mean you can pretend it doesn't exist.

As far as I'm concerned, "French" is problematic enough that it makes it very difficult for me to enjoy anything else any of the people on that song are involved in. I'm glad you're comfortable enough in your male privilege to defend the rights of the rape-glorifiers, though. God knows, they're such an oppressed group.

And I was stupid to think that I could avoid having that reality shoved into my face by simply avoiding the departure lounge forum. You guys are sanctimonious douchebags anywhere on this forum you post. And there's a great concentration of the worst of you in the hip-hop threads. So yeah, this is my last post on LPTJ.

TSKS, I think my post sparked something I wasn't intending. I actually had no idea MellowHype was related to Odd Future, and still don't know exactly how. I got BLACKENEDWHITE because I'm a sucker for upside-down crosses.

So. I don't know what bag I opened up, but you're awesome. You solved my Atomic Rooster problem. Stick around.

Man, fishjim, are you apologizing for liking a rap album?

Anyhow, back to the music.

So this Pastor Troy song, the second one on there... isn't that the same synth line as Killer Mike's "Bang" just way faster?  Please confirm my sanity.

Nah. This is like the 3rd misreading of what I meant, so clearly the problem is mine.

All I meant by "is it a trap" is - as a relatively new ear to contemporary rap - is BLACKENEDWHITE really as good as it sounds, or is my reaction just a white dude coming around to the fact that rap kept getting better since he stopped following it, around the time of X-Clan?

Sheesh, people. Emotions run high around rap.

Damn, I hope that's not true. We've had that discussion about whwther it's okay to listen to music by people whose public views you find abhorrent so many times on this board before (black metal, emo, rap), that I can't believe you're so upset that a few people like this Lil Future thing (I haven't heard this nonsense - I'm only in this thread as a voyeur). I mean this rapper is practically a child, right? Siouxsie Siooux wore a swastika armband, y'know?

Anyway, I hope you're just having a shit day (you know what I mean!) and that you do keep posting. I always like your music posts, man, and you're one of the people on here who gets me interested in a wider range of music. Having said all that, I recommend more ambient drone and less homophobic hiop hop.

BLACKENEDWHITE is pretty damn good.  It's rough around the edges and has some filler, and Hodgy was definitely in a journeyman phase when he recorded it - I imagine NUMBERS will be fantastic, given that you can hear the guy improve every time he gets on tape - but the highs are great and the sound is really engaging.

What about gangsta ambient drone, though.

dude, you came to the hip hop thread to make the same argument that's been had a thousand times here and everywhere, how did you think no one would pull you up on it? you seem to keep picking fights and then taking it as an opportunity to declare your hatred for everyone and flounce, then come back a few weeks later.

i hope this post doesn't make you stay away for good just to prove a point, cause you're cool, but for serious.
