A lot of people liked
Codeine Cowboy
. I remain unconvinced - he's competent, but he's not doing anything that is getting me really hyped up. The sheer depth of his drawl is pretty impressive though.
2 chainz' line
"promethazine, contraband,
told them folks we a country band"
=
my favorite thing right now
that pastor troy synth is not the same as "bang" though it might be pitched up a full octave.
sort of bummed out that
tru realigion
is mostly lex synths and drippy droppies. 2 chainz sounds better over more diverse production. see, uhh, EVERY good playaz circle track.
asap's
live love
would've made a better short player. dude needs some more boy scout buckles for switching up flows. a lot of filler. why you drink so much lean rocky? why you say things like "talkin 'bout no diamonds cause that shit is a facade / times is really hard, i fucked a couple broads"?
antero, was that gibbs tape
cold day in hell
? looks like there's more jeezy/gibbs work on
the real is back 2
.
word is that
tm 103
is finally dropping next month. i'll believe it when i hear it, but there it is.

Yeah,
Cold Day In Hell
.
I swear to god that Pastor Troy song has the same synth line as "Bang" just faster.
That 2 Chainz line is pretty great. That drawl. "Country band" and "contraband" are homonyms. Remember last year when his name was still Tity Boi and it was hella awkward?

It sounds like a drag name. At a recent event, my wife did a whole "Rapper or Burlesque Dancer?" thing, where she'd read a name and people would have to guess. It was impossible. They definitely got Shady Blaze wrong

There's definitely a well-known NYC burlesque dancer named Clams Casino. She used to have the Clam God beat on google, but now I see she's way down on page 1, behind even the actual food

This makes me want to become a cutting-edge underground hip hop producer named Jonny Porkpie, just to banish the real one into google oblivion

I loved that album, but that's a very different sort of meaning to attach to the same phrase.

stumbled on
this
blog over at metafilter.
same voice as BIGGHOSTFACE, and according to the dates, is older. maybe the same author.
re: asap as curator rather than artist.
hip hop is a necessarily curatorial form of artistry, these are the same arguments that are made when speaking of hip hop as a meta genre. kool herc, steinski, and hank shocklee are, before anything else, excellent curators. the create galleries of wax, on wax and deliver to the listener their exhibitions. it's difficult to make the leap from that sort of producer...via producer/emcees such as pimp c, triple 6, mf doom, krit, oddisee, obviously kanye, to an interesting extent lil b (if you've read how he chooses producers), and so on and so on...because he doesn't produce his own records. for me, this reads as a lack. back when
kala
was released, diplo disparaged m.i.a. as a great curator of her own records, and this is instructional. we can draw comparisons here (even though
kala
is a far superior record and moves beyond its own limits as a curatorial exercise). we can appreciate asap's beat selection, while understanding that he, as an artist, is only tangentially responsible for what we're hearing, far less than a mixtape dj who spends countless hours blending and respinning, sampling out loops, often working to create a cohesion rather than an assortment. (this is the difference between pastiche and collage, a split that finds rocky on its decidedly former half.) it's frustrating though to see "works" such as these lauded for the qualities that any reasonably learned critic immediately understands as derivative. though they'd never admit it, and cringe when they realize, even critical circles have their candy corn.

For me, I mean, I'd just rather hear another rapper over those beats! Shit, I would enjoy the hell out of hearing
Soulja
rap over "Bass." As a critic, I do not think that I'm asking the moon, here
