I tried finding the general all-purpose creative writing thread that I'm sure exists around here somewhere, but I couldn't find it, so I figured the awesome thread works too, and then I saw we could probably use a new one, so here we are.

Anyway, I know some of you have read my short story "Mountains for Rats." I'm pretty damn proud of it, and I think it's good enough to be published somewhere, but I kind of kept putting off submitting it anywhere, because I'm a scaredy cat and afraid of rejection and all that. Well, today, I finally decided fuck it, what do I have to lose, and submitted it to a few different journals (both print and online), so now it's the super duper fun part, waiting and possibly never hearing anything back (or at least not anything good). But yeah! I'm excited!

Good on you, Jeb. I think I have an earlier draft, but you're right, it is a damn good story. Lots of luck!

Jeb that is great! I remember reading a draft of that a couple few years ago; I'd love to take another look some time.

I've also been feeling the fiction bug recently, but I won't be able to scratch it for a while. I'm about to start work on an article I've been preparing to write for months, though, and which may (hopefully!) already have a publication venue. Excited and anxious.

That's awesome news, jeb. Believe me, I know how hard it is to send out work you're proud of. I'm still not sure why it's so terrifying. Partly it's that the more certain you are that your piece is a good one, the more you've got at stake if you're rejected.

After probably 15 yrs of playing this game with myself, I've come to accept that you can trust your pride, and that good work doesn't go away. Usually it finds its rightful home in places a lot more fitting than where you'd originally submitted it. The catch is that sometimes you have to wait five, ten, fifteen years.

Love this story, it deserves to go somewhere.

Speaking of awesome creative writing - just saw this satire of a Goldman Sachs fund prospectus that's being reposted on friends' FB walls:

Dear Investor:

Up until now, Goldman Sachs has been silent on the subject of the protest
movement known as Occupy Wall Street. That does not mean, however, that it
has not been very much on our minds. As thousands have gathered in Lower
Manhattan, passionately expressing their deep discontent with the status
quo, we have taken note of these protests. And we have asked ourselves this
question:

How can we make money off them?

The answer is the newly launched Goldman Sachs Global Rage Fund, whose
investment objective is to monetize the Occupy Wall Street protests as they
spread around the world. At Goldman, we recognize that the capitalist system
as we know it is circling the drain - but there's plenty of money to be made on the way down.

The Rage Fund will seek out opportunities to invest in products that are
poised to benefit from the spreading protests, from police batons and
barricades to stun guns and forehead bandages. Furthermore, as clashes
between police and protesters turn ever more violent, we are making
significant bets on companies that manufacture replacements for broken
windows and overturned cars, as well as the raw materials necessary for the construction and incineration of effigies.

It would be tempting, at a time like this, to say "Let them eat cake." But
at Goldman, we are actively seeking to corner the market in cake futures. We project that through our aggressive market manipulation, the price of a
piece of cake will quadruple by the end of 2011.

Please contact your Goldman representative for a full prospectus. As the
world descends into a Darwinian free-for-all, the Goldman Sachs Rage Fund is a great way to tell the protesters, "Occupy this." We haven't felt so good about something we've sold since our souls.

Sincerely,

Lloyd Blankfein

Chairman, Goldman Sachs

Yeah jeb! Most excellent news.

In a similar vein, last weekend I bumped into a dude I sorta know in town and hung around with him for 6 hours or so. He asked if I would potentially be interested in a threesome with him and his new ladyfriend. She came along later, all red-haired and glassesed and I was like "YES I would totally hang out with her and her body".

Getting to the point though, we also bumped into a friend of his, who I also ended up hanging out with for 6 hours after that, which was largely spent editing his autobiography in a cafe until 3am or so. He's been to 45 countries, making money via playing 3 minute games of chess as a street busking thing. His autobiography needs work, but hell, I LIKE editing. Also he gave me the idea that maybe I could do a similar show but with playing Boggle. Would only work in English-speaking countries, but yeah. Cool people are cool, and editing is aaawesome.

So I have an essay due in 3 hours. For some reason I decided to start writing it at 4am this morning. At 2500 words, it's the longest essay I've had to write so far (hey, lay off, I'm a "freshman"!). But I'm finished! And I don't think it's half bad. Going to hand it in now LIKE A BOSS.

True story: Chet told me what the essay topic was and I was all "c'mon dude that paper writes itself, go on and rock that shit dogg" and now here he is, rocking that shit.

So I'll take credit for your essay.

And your birthday.

Nicely done, Thermo and Chet. And happy birthday!

Planning on rejoining the gym tonight, which I'm actually sincerely pleased about, but apparently decided the appropriate way to celebrate was to eat the remaining half of a decadent cookie from yesterday's lunch as today's breakfast. It was everything I'd hoped it could be.

I've been hosting team trivia at a local pub twice a month for a couple months now, and it's getting a better and better turnout each time. I always get a lot of compliments afterwards, and last night I got a $20 bump in my pay! Which means I'm making an extra hundo a month off this shit!

That is indeed awesome! Did you know that Drew from Cbus does several trivia nights a week? You guys should, like, trade notes.

Pub trivia nights are one of those things I thought would be terminally lame until I actually went and had a blast. Good on ya, Jeb.
