You should write a paper about your experience teaching Breaking Bad. I'm serious!

I went to a potluck and had good chats and then we did lots of dancing and drinking, and I say, it's damn fine when you don't have to explain to your friend why AC/DC are great and why we should watch early-era stuff right now and air guitar like mad.

A long, long time ago, I was at a bachelor party for a friend, and we decided to do a sort of March Madness bracket for best rock guitarist. Angus Young got paired with Ry Cooder, and me, being the snob I was, objected strenuously to Angus progressing.

I've never regretted my youth more. The fool I was!

I just mean - Angus is OF COURSE the better rock guitarist.

EDIT: You have to imagine a dozen drunk, stoned dudes in Tahoe, arguing about rock around a huge kitchen table. I was the ONLY guy for Ry Cooder, and I had reasons to share.

Rad rad pollo Cool It's pretty alright here too. Not fantastic, but I've been feeling much calmer and like myself over the past week than usual.

Originally posted this is another thread, but belongs here now:

I applied to go to a conference in Potsdam in July mostly on the grounds that it's about time I visit Berlin again. I hope they'll accept my (marginally off-topic, but arguably relevant anyway) proposal. Berlin is lots of fun!

Proposal accepted! First time in a while I've felt unambiguously happy about the prospect of attending an academic conference. In part because it turns out that the conference is not, as I had thought, in Potsdam (a pretty boring town very close to Berlin), but right in the middle of Berlin-Friedrichshain.

Had a meeting with a career services counselor today. It was actually quite helpful! She gave me some really good starting points for researching various careers outside academia, and generally made me feel more excited and less anxious about the future. I'm slowly coming around to the fact that the life of a career academic is probably not for me, and that that doesn't mean I've wasted my time. Quite the contrary! An MA in a field that stresses communications and writing has a bevy of possible applications, many of which hadn't occurred to me. I generally just feel pretty positive about the future right now. It's nice.

That's great, dude.

I regret not talking to career services. Coulda saved myself another 6 months of shit work before lucking into my current job. We're coming from a similar background so I'd be intersted in hearing what kind of options were mentioned.

Regrettably, career services at UGA has never been a priority. They staff the department with, like, student workers or something. My experience was not nearly so positive as yours, and I graduated with my BA thinking, well, I guess I'll get an MFA. Which was a terrible idea for me.

Maybe, hopefully, career planning is becoming more of a priority for universities across the board. Glad they treated you right!

In addition to traditional tracks for English/comm people, like publishing, we talked about human resources, marketing, product and business development, and non-faculty careers within the academy, like logistics, fundraising, grant writing, etc. They also showed me some useful resources that my university provides for job searching & research.

We also looked at brewery & craft beer distribution job listings in the NYC area. Cool

Dudes! Dudes.

Tomorrow is my brother's birthday, and I wanted to surprise (read: humiliate) him with a copy of the short documentary I made about him when I was 16 and he was 21. When looking for the DV tape of the doc, I found instead some tapes containing footage I thought didn't exist anymore—including clips of me, my mom, my brother, and my dad from eleven years ago; two scenes starring my beloved dead cat Crocodile; and, best of all, twenty minutes of my mom dancing in 1978. The last I will upload to Vimeo tomorrow. I can't tell you how excited I am to find this.

A still:

The documentary about my brother, meanwhile, turned out to be on my computer all along—but it can wait.

Wow. This is the equivalent of finding lapiz lazuli out of nowhere. Make sure to make a copy out of every single minute of video so it will never be lost, that is convert it to digital and store it properly.
