Last night we were too tired to cook so we went to our friend's restaurant and I got the 3x spice level they usually only make for the waiters and such, and then we got our meal comped!  Free Vietnamese food is definitely awesome!

I think I saw a black crowned night heron at Central Park!  The internet tells me they're also known as "QUARK BIRDS"

Aw, yeah. Hadn't heard QUARK BIRD before, but I bet it's because of their call, which goes like this:

QUOCK

Moved most of my boxes today; cleaning is tomorrow and furniture is Sunday. I forgot how big the apartment is--we signed the lease in February--and I am SUPER STOKED to live there.

except:

what is a good way to get an old-lady smell out of an apartment? It smells very strongly of old lady.

or maybe because of science you should invite another old lady over for a bit and like i said earlier, because of science, the two smells will cancel each other out.

Only awesome in the mildest sense of the word, but I just successfully cut through a nightmare of banking-related bureaucratic red tape by ... downloading a free document scanning app? Saved me several trips/phone calls and a little money. It's the little things people.

Awesome with potentially not awesome future drawbacks (but still awesome overall): being offered a 401k for the first time in your life, and then finding out that your employer's matching policy is really good, so you'd be a damn fool not to contribute the maximum they'll match if at all possible (I mean, would you leave half your money sitting on the table if you didn't absolutely have to?), so you refigure your whole budget and streeeeeetch to make it happen and then

Not awesome: Of course you actually have to look at all the information someone gave you at some point about deciding how to invest your money, whereupon you realize that you do not have the time, intelligence, or inclination to figure out what the hell any of this shit means at all and then

Awesome: Mentioning your predicament to your little brother, who is an incredibly busy and overworked finance guy and CPA at one of the big four accounting firms--not really expecting him to be able to do much except maybe give you a couple of tips that will prevent you from, like, incurring gigantic fees or something--but who instead asks you to forward him the information and then e-mails you back a completed investment allocation worksheet with an accompanying executive summary of the choices he suggests and a comprehensive analysis (in words you actually understand!) of each fund he wants you to put little bits of your money into!

Little brothers: they are awesome (when they grow up) (sometimes).

Nice! (though I'm sure anywhere above 80-85 in NYC must be a bit steep already). I've greatly enjoyed being able to open the windows and breathe this weekend after a few days at 32-35°C (90-95F)...

Bill recorded covers of songs I like as a birthday present. He had to record them in secret, which got harder once I stopped working, but he managed to finish the project before we went to the hospital to have the baby. In fact, he made me listen to the CD in the car on the way there in the middle of the night. It was so cute. (Just thinking about it because I finally got the tracks on my computer!)

Got an unexpected bonus from the boss today! Not enough to retire on, but enough to buy a pretty sweet TV or something, though.

HOLY SHIT MY SODASTREAM IS THE GREATEST

Visiting my sodastream-owning friend in Berlin in July finally inspired me to get one of those myself. It's really, really great.
