Buh. Sometimes I wonder why I even drink at all. Only had four beers last night but still had terrible, fitful sleep. So instead of getting up and going to the gym at 6a like normal, I laid in bed awake and miserable for the last two hours. And now I'll be tired and sluggish and off my game all day, when I've got a ton of end-of-semester shit needs doin.

I feel that way pretty much every time I drink.

I almost never drink any more.

Alcohol is a big part of my life: craft beer, whiskey, cocktails, homebrewing, etc. But I almost always have a better time, and a MUCH better time the next day, when I drink sparingly--4oz samples of each craft beer going around, for example, or 4oz of gin over the course of a couple hours. Last night I wanted to reward myself for training super hard the last couple days, so I had two of D's delicious black bean & corn burgers, along with a 22oz bomber of IPA and two 12oz Belgian ales. And I felt like total bloated shit going to bed. Which led to a restless night, etc. I think my relationship with alcohol is just changing.

The worst part of drinking is absolutely the sleep it brings. I still don't get terrible hangovers unless I really overdo it, but anything more than 2 drinks will surely leave me feeling unrested the next morning.

I still fight this myself. I love drinking, but I hate over-drinking. Any more than 2-3 beers and my game is off.

Belgian-style beers are usually the ones that lay me low. Probably because they taste so good I can't stop.

This, precisely.

I remember having to cut way back on high-ABV beer a couple years ago. If I had more than one at 7% or higher, it just ruined me. Now I usually avoid them.

And I'm starting to feel the same way about sweet/syrupy mixed drinks -- I had a pretty nasty hangover one morning this week after drinking 3-4 scotch & ginger ales the night before. And it happened a few weeks ago with Jack & coke.

Straight scotch is what I ought to stick to, but when I don't have $50 to buy something decent, a $20 bottle of Cutty Sark and a 2 liter bottle of ginger ale can seem like a good idea. It isn't.

Hey, do any of you ever have a thing where you get drowsy after a couple of IPAs? Not drunk drowsy, just sleepytime drowsy? I noticed that every time I had the local brewpub's IPA I got real sleepy, but when I had their slightly higher ABV Scotch Ale it didn't happen. I did a cursory googling and apparently it's a real thing, that hops can make you sleepy, but for me it's only certain IPAs, so I wonder if it's only certain hops. But man, now I find myself avoiding my favorite style of beer when I'm out and about so that I don't start clamoring for bed by 10PM which is kind of a bummer.

Wow, Josh, that's interesting. I once had a really weird time with an unpronounceable Polish wheat beer, that involved a protracted sleepy period, and a really bad all-day hangover. I had one of them. One fucking beer. Annoying.

The French people have time and again proven to be absolutely disgusting in recent decades, but this is a new low:

This is going to be a very stressful two weeks. Or five years and two weeks.

At least in America our election spoilers are harmless old marginal coots, not iron-eyed fascist demagogues.

Quote
Sarkozy gave a defiant speech, going on the offensive and betraying no hint of having been beaten. He styled the result as a "crisis" vote, by a French population which was "suffering". In a clear overture to Le Pen's voters, and the extreme-right motto of loving France, he said: "I call on all French people who put love of their country above partisan considerations, to unite and join me." He vowed to tighten border controls, stop manufacturers from leaving France, make work pay and defend law and order.

What a fucking miserable little troll

He is sickening, and there's an entire army of equally sickening sycophantic shitheads who will stop at nothing to stay in power behind him. His first term was so disastrous that it boggles the mind to think he could be reelected.

The first fucking thing he said is that he recognized that the results expressed "the concern of our compatriots to save our way of life". At which point I had to drink five more beers to forget that this country even exists.

The whole of my knowledge of French politics is related to my having read The Coming Insurrection, but yeesh, yeah, it seems like a total mess.

The people whose couch I'm crashing on...it turns out they're getting turned out of their apartment in a week.

And I don't have an apartment yet.

We'll see how this goes.

Actually let me expand that. I have a back room with a door that closes (mostly), that has in it a couch which folds out into a bed. It also has the Xbox 360 so anybody staying in that room would likely have frequent visits from several kids of various ages.
