I am in my once-yearly panic about having no idea what to get my mom.

On the plus side, I have now managed, for the second year in a row, to convince my sister and her wife not to exchange presents at all, and I will just get something for their daughter!  I got her a glockenspiel (LOUD) and some kids' plastic garden tools (DIRTY)

Glockenspiels are awesome, and I think E needs one like this. His friend's mother plays one that is similar

question:
am I a failure as a daughter/a gift giver if I am completely ignoring the list of suggestions my dad gave me for himself and his wife? (a sample suggestion for his wife: INSULATED UNDERWEAR.)

why is this so stressful

Those mixes look excellent, davy.
I like the Xmas gifting rules a friend laid out the other day: Kids get presents, adults get drunk.

Conversation with sister just now:

Her: "I am sooooo happy I decided not to 'do' Christmas this year. I feel really, really good about it. I haven't done any retail shopping at all. I'm glad I'm going to this Solstice party; that's so much more meaningful to me than some religious tradition."

Me: "None of it's meaningful to me; all I care about is eating and drinking and seeing people and exchanging gifts and being happy together."

Her: "Well we weren't raised in a Christian tradition; I don't know why you'd participate in something like Christmas. I don't feel any connection to it at all."

Me: "I wasn't raised with any spiritual reverence for the natural world, either. The Solstice has zero meaning for me, except in that it demarcates the changing lengths of the days. This holiday only has significance for me insofar as it gives me leisure time to spend with people I care about."

Her: "I guess that's one read on it."

Yep! Sure is

:/ can't she do both the solstice AND christmas-y stuff? I've never felt a religious connection to it. It's just something we did because it was fun. Not really worth trying to change her mind though.

Yeah. I guess what really bugs me is the self-righteousness of it compounded by juvenile rebelliousness.

I just hung out with my grandmother a bit.

She is really hilarious and not much like a grandmother, except for the part where she buys a $60 goose and convinces the clerk to give her 2 $2 bags of breadcrumbs for free.

People keep saying "someone gave me this, I don't want it.  Do you want it?".  So far I have gotten a pair of socks, 2 gel pens, some hand sanitizer, water flavoured lip balm (?), cheetos and coke, a loaf of home made bread (!), and a calendar of Newfoundland scenes like men riding skidoos in the snow and a church with dark, dark clouds above it.  How many weird, cheap regifts do you think I can accumulate in the next 9 days?

I'll take the calendar of Newfoundland scenes if you don't want it. Bonus for depictions of rustic cod fisheries and/or salting sheds.

I think there actually is one semi-legitimate old-fashioned cod fishery left up there. It's probably a mismanaged boondoggle that subsidizes welfare through tourism to keep a dead town alive.

I've never had the religious aspect neither. Why I am not a huge fan of Christmas is because while I love my dad, sister, boyfriend and stepmother and like spending time with them, my stepmother's family mean next to nothing to me. This is the only time a year when I see them and it's almost always weird. Besides, my stepsister is a bit of a bitch in general, so why would I want to gift her anything. It's easier with Grace and Col there at least. This year, however, me and my flatmate may be making an orphan's Christmas for everyone in the evening, which should be nice.

The problem I have with the holiday is tied to its rigid concepts of what family means, which for me have always ended up including step-family, or weird family of father's flatmate, i.e. hanging out with people who I have fuck-all in common with. At least this time I get my friend-family.
