D evidently couldn't sleep last night and so prepared tacos al pastor for dinner tonight. Pork loin is in the slow cooker, and I just made the salsa verde.

Guys "Punjab Choley" from Trader Joe's poured over rice: pre-packaged deliciousness. Looks just like the anonymous red chickpea goop at every Indian buffet, but spicier, with more sodium. That's that tasty fuckin cho-cho.

jeezum crow these were really really really good. Al pastor is like the best combination of flavors imaginable if you like acidity.

Gonna make chicken adobo tomorrow & wondered if one of you guys had a recipe you like for it?

Turned out really well! Finished the chicken under the broiler and it crisped the skin and kept it very juicy. Served it over egg noodles with the reduced coconut milk adobo sauce. Really tasty! And breaking down the chicken was a first for me; I saved all the chicken bits to make stock with.

Honestly, improvisation will work fine.  An amber or brown ale or non-shitty lager would be easy, but if you wanted to get more adventurous anything malty-rather-than-hoppy could do the trick.  A stout could be cool.  Use as much as you like, just keep track of the total amount of liquid.

Yeah I've never cooked chili with beer but I'd imagine any notable flavor a lighter lager might impart might get lost among all the acid. I'd go with a stout or maybe a porter, or a dark lager like a dunkel.

I often use Negra Modelo which is a Mexican beer, and Mexican beers are essentially bad versions of German beers, this particular one being a dunkel lager. Other times I use New Belgium 1554 which is a dark Belgian-style ale. So I think you're on the right track.

I use Negra Modelo when braising beef to make Mexican-style shredded beef. It seems to work very well.

Do you have a recipe for this you could share? I am looking for more slow cooker recipes now that we got one.

Grabbed some tamale from the Tamale Spaceship for lunch today. Got the "Picturesque" which is cochinita pibil tamale with pickled onions & tomato habanero sauce. Holy crap it was good. Last week I tried seasonal duck tamale with a plum mole from there--also fantastic. Here is a food truck that I can get behind. Also, the dude wears a luchador mask which is fun.

there is a food court with a really large variety of different types of food across from my school.  by far my favorite is a place called est west, for $5 you can get a tray of any number of salads and they're not full of mayonnaise or oil and salt - there is a little added flavor but not too much.

$5!  i can't describe how glad i am to have this place in my life.  i wish it was always in my life.  i wish it was on my doorstep.

Did I mention the cookies I made? I made them with bacon jerky and sesame seeds.

They are very good cookies.

Got another whole chicken and made a bunch of stock, then made soup with part of it. Totally delicious! I am so so so enjoying learning how to cook. I dig every part of it, even the prep and mise en place. I can't wait to get back to NYC and take some classes like D & I have been talking about.

I think I have an allergy to Dominos pizza. I've been ordering it for research groups I've been running and eating leftovers, and each time I've ended up coughing and feeling like my throat and nose are inflamed. I've been ok eating good pizza recently, so maybe it's some weird ingredient? Don't have any food allergies I know of... Having to avoid Dominos wouldn't be bad, but it would be nice to know what the allergenic substance is.

Also, I have a feeling that despite knowing this might be the case, it's going to be hard to not eat some of the still left over pizza in my office tomorrow...

Ive reached the point where I'm jealous of people on tv when they are eating food, even if I'm eating at the time. I just read about someone eating a sandwich and now I want a sandwich. Or six. Goddammit baby, it's midnight!

I hate Papa Johns. Their sauce is grossly sweet. But I tend to use Dominos for this particular research subject-feeding purpose, because they are familiar with being paid by DAV and delivering to our weird campus building, so it's easier. When getting pizza for myself, I get it from either this NY style place that's surprisingly decent or Mellow Mushroom (pretty good pizza, and I like their whole grain crust).

Yeah I don't care for Papa John's much, either, and I think I already started a couple flamewars by dissing the garlic urine specimens enclosed in every delivery.

Mellow Mushroom is pretty damn good, though! I like their white pizza w/ extra tomatoes.

7-11 pizza is pretty good in a pinch tbh but I think everyone is allergic to it if you know what I mean and I think you do.

the garlic urine sample is so delicious. And I live directly behind a papa johns, so... but for real I've only ordered from there ONCE.

I also like dominoes because of the deep dish.

the best pizza is probably any place called Anthony's. There are two very close to each other here and they are both excellent.

mellow mushroom is aiight.
