Ok. Do you not eat meat?

Well, no, but same goes for the bean substitute mixture. That stuff is just... muddy.

I greatly prefer the bean paste to the beef at Taco Bell!  The baja chalupa with SUB BEAN is texturally fantastic; just a wee bee of crispness on the outside, yielding to a soft mushy interior.  Like a big bug!

Which, I hasten to add, is not available at Taco Bell. Unless that Taco Bell is next to a McDonalds in the food court.

Made Bittman's paella tonight with shrimp and chorizo. Intensely aromatic; I remember balking when D bought that gram of saffron a couple of years ago, but this wouldn't be the same without it.

Put it on the burner for a couple minutes at the end to crust the bottom. Goddamn!

Cast iron is actually a pretty good choice if you don't have one of those skinny paella pans. I would like some of that, plz, epd.

Cast iron is amazing but it doesn't make the chicken any less of a chump.

Well tonight we decided to skip the usual drunken Catholic Church fish fry extravaganza that is customary for this time of year and instead have a great big shrimp boil. OH MAN what a great idea. Shrimp, scallops, red potatoes, sweet corn, peppers, onions, butter (lots). Also, we baked some sweet potato fries and asparagus in bacon grease. Also we made some bacon and wrapped it around the asparagus and sweet potato fries. Also, we battered some cod and fried it in bacon grease. And don't worry, we still drank a bunch of beers.

From my kids' boy scout fish fry last night:

That's hand-battered perch and fries from fresh-cut potatoes. Good stuff.

Is perch healthy? I bought some intending to fry it in flour and paprika but it just kept looking back at the me until it started to smell and I threw it to the gulls. I do, however, appreciate the scouts and have a soap dish with their motto to remind me every day: I pledge to lead by example, to be true and brave.

Healthy? I dunno. It's fish. But it's breaded and fried. Call it a wash I guess. It was pretty damn tasty.

Isaw one o' them Papa Johns pepperoncinis on the sidewalk today and my nigh-overwhelming instinct was to grab it and eat it right there.  I had no idea I was harboring such a craving!

So I bought a jar of them at the grocery store, and had a couple.  They're good, though less spicy than I remembered them being.  Maybe I've just been eating a lot of spicy food lately.

Hey, I've been scarfing from a grocery store jar of pepperoncinis lately, too! Wish I'd gotten the mild instead of the hot, though.
