i think the joke was more to make fanboys excited. and the original announcement was for an Earth/Sunn and Boris collaboration, which in fact also came true. i think all three bands have a lot in common stylistically. some of the boris (as opposed to BORIS) releases certainly aren't all that different from Sunn. your original post made it sound like they operated on different planets, sonically.

You're simply wrong though about the effect the label expected to have - Southern Lord explicitly described how surprised they were by the interest, and why would they lie about that? They're Southern Lord - you don't start a doom metal label in order to follow hype.

I have said this a ton but Mike G is fucking great, and the way he puts lines together has a lot in common with classic Bun B.  He is an awesome rapper and deserves more attention.

Earl's technique continues to be downright terrifying.  Like, seriously, terrifying.  If he was a guitarist he'd have people throwing their guitars in the attic.  As is I feel like he'd have people cutting out their tongues.
