Milly

wait, what? was this an lptj-related server? can i get a piece of the action?

We've got a little crew of 3 folks playing Minecraft on Xbox. What we do is take a randomly-generated map and give everyone three full days (I think that comes out to about 45 min. in actual time?) to forage for resources and construct a mine/fortress, then after the three days are up the gloves come off and everyone is free to hunt down and kill anyone else and steal their shit.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to find massive veins of coal early on, and I constructed this hellish labyrinth of underground lakes, magma chambers and passageways to nowhere, churning out steel armor and gold swords and biding my time. Circumstances prompted Milly to adopt a less glamorous nomadic approach, lumbering through forests and mountains by day, eating raw pig and building makeshift shelters at night to keep queer creatures at bay. He pushed closer to my fortress every day, like a bad wind, and I sat on my throne deep in rock and waited for the inevitable. He found his way into the mountain and descended down spiraling corridors of stone, a maze I'd constructed to remind Milly of the twisting passageways that dwell within the darkest reaches of a desperate man's mind.

And finally he emerged into my inner sanctum, a vaulted torch-lit chamber with a magma pit in the center that tossed a sinister orange glow upon the cobblestone. I was perched atop a rock throne like the boss from some 1980s RPG...and he saw I was clad in heavy steel armor from head to toe and... homeboy simply ran off! He knew I couldn't keep up with him. I later caught up with him and kilt him dead, then the other dude we're playing came down into my fort with a DIAMOND sword and took me out in a couple swipes after dumping a bucket of lava on my head. The bucket of lava was a nice touch, that's a quick way to throw a dude's calm domestic abode into frantic chaos. I had lava waterfalls where my stairs used to be and shit.

Playing a bit more at the moment, enjoying it but it's a little boring solo. I like wandering around the countryside, spotting a vein of coal or ore in a high mountain pass and dutifully climbing up there with my pickaxe. But then I find the actual mining part tedious, and I start thinking things like "man, I wonder if I could pay a neighborhood kid to do all the mining for me" and suddenly I'm at a Faustian life intersection where a nice guy like myself could make the wrong decision and become Henry Clay Frick.

Yo mo-mo, I'm a class A digger. I'm a cave dweller. I surf on the lava. I'm the neighborhood kid! I get excited when I see lapiz lazuli, that's how much I love digging!

I found lapiz lazuli for the first time yesterday, I was excited! Didn't really know what to do with it.

I started a pretty crazy project yesterday. Found a massive lava waterfall on the outside of a mountain and, as I dug out my stairs for my mine, I also dug out an adjacent/parallel culvert for the lava then redirected the lava down into my mine as a kind of natural light source. So I got this incredibly long, twisting lava river that's right beside my main passageway. It lights up everything, barely need any torches! Even got bridges and crossovers and shit, and I dug that shit all the way down to the bedrock where it empties into a huge magma vault. I found an underground river and dredged a channel to divert it into my main fortress area where I keep all my chests and my bed and shit, so I've got side-by-side lava and water moats deep underground, gives it a nice ambiance.

Long-term plan is to dig separate mines in a pair of adjacent mountains and construct a robust multi-modal transportation network of boats and railroads to connect it all. My chief complaint about the game is the lack of a x-y-z coordinate system, which would make all of this much easier. Or maybe it's just the Xbox version that doesn't have a coordinate system. Anyway, it's pretty fun! Would be way easy to get carried away playing it.

Sounds awesome! Lapiz lazuli doesn't really do much, but if you have 9 of them you can make a solid block of it which is pretty cool for decoration. I guess I can't play on your la-di-da XBox server because I don't have an XBox. Then I read this:

Ayo JimTheBeerGuy, we got the formations of a Settlers of Catan group happening on Xbox these days, you interested in playing sometime?

Aw come on, anybody can play that game for FREE on Mac, PC or Linux. I'd love to play any of you guys in Catan but again, no XBox.

Man! I have Arkham City (came free with my brother's video card so he gave it to me) but I still haven't played it yet. Mostly because I got so wrapped up in that stupid LA Noire game (okay so you guys were right) and now I'm playing Portal 2. But man, am I ever excited to get started with that one!

For me, I totally re-discovered the game when I played it in multiplayer. In single player, after surviving a few nights and building a comfy abode the thrill gets away quickly. But the onslaught never stops in multiplayer and you always gotta be on guard. Then alliance are made/broken which gives the game an element of drama which is entirely absent in the single player version.

That sounds awesome! I think it'd be harder on Xbox, but I'd like to get enough people playing that you could form sides and have two warring factions with their own base, each with delegated roles like defense, construction, materials mining, etc.

I miss gears of war. If anyone wants to play, let me know. I know most of us are on different clocks, of course. I guess this is a lament more than a request.

We're moving out of this apartment in two months or so, which is reasonable and good by every measure, except one. It's a ground floor apartment and I'm kinda thinking we should stay here because we can play baller beats without pissing off any potential downstairs neighbors. Alternatively, I'll be looking for a 2nd or 3rd shift job so I can play Baller Beats while the downstairs neighbors (who are entirely speculative at this point) will be at work.

That's the only full-length retail game I've S-ranked. I've finished it at least four times. It's a masterpiece. Gameplay isn't perfect, but everything else is, and it's one of the most charming things ever.

I finished Bastion this weekend, and it has a lot to recommend itself. I'd buy this Humble Indie Bundle, except I already own everything except Amnesia and the new game!

I keep trying to play Bastion, but the WASD keys for movement are so hard to use that I can't get into it: I keep quitting in frustration.
