The idea's actually really cool: You're a random refugee displaced by the events of the first game, and instead of being a grand epic, it takes place entirely within the immediate environs of the foreign city where you end up. And instead of having a great destiny, you end up caught up in a bunch of shit just because you're there and you're trying to scrape a few bucks together.

The story unfolds from there in a really smart and intricate way, too. The problem is that all the game mechanics are the same, so the more tightly-focused storytelling, while nice, just means you end up clearing the same maps 95 times.

I didn't really like Dragon Age because the fight difficulty scaled really bizarrely. Things were either trivial or impossible. There was one fight that I think I played through about 20 times due to a bad save. Same thing with Skyrim. Everything was very very easy until I fought the big bad for the first time and it was impossible. I'm really enjoying Kingdom of Amalur right now, since it's essentially single-player World of Warcraft, and the class/ability structure is pretty interesting (I.E., classes are "constructed" dependent on which abilities you choose.) I lost about 6-7 hours playing it yesterday.

Yes it does look like some fun. I'm quite shitty at online shooters but I'd be quite into giving this a go on Steam if there some LPTJ people in there.

I quite liked Dragon Age but as with so many other RPGs I put 50-60 hours into and then completely lost interest. Fought the last boss three times and lost each time, figured that the ending cutscenes weren't really worth it anyway and said fuck it. I have a hard time maintaining interest in video games. Didn't even finish New Vegas.

I also think Dave is right on w/r/t the combat. I found myself constantly adjusting the combat difficulty to either provide a bit of a challenge or because I was sick of fighting the same battle over and over and over again.

Alex they have Ticket to Ride on Xbox (with two of the expansions and the Europe version) AND Settlers of Catan. We could play that shit! JUST SAYIN.

That sounds like fun! I will look into that. But not immediately - the plan for this weekend is to move my furniture into the house that me and the Xbox already reside in.

Which NPC are you gonna bone?

I haven't met them all yet, I guess. But me and Alistair really bonded last time I played, y'know.

It's a testament to the strength of GTA4's world-building and storylines that anyone bothered to finish it. Every single one of that game's mechanics is underwhelming.

GTAIV kinda sucked, despite it having a downscale version of one of my favorite places in it.

San Andreas is an all time great game.  I didn't finish 4.

i liked them both a lot. two different sorta games.
that said i hope V goes a little dumber than IV. it at least looks like it might be similar to SA in its size and sprawling nature.

They're both beautiful games, no doubt! I hope I can avoid getting sucked in by the hype for V though because I can't deal with the self-loathing inherent in spending 20-ish hours driving a shopping basket with ice skates for wheels listening to some idiot rant at me and a further 10 hours snapping to cover and clicking L then R to shoot dudes without aiming, all the while wondering what it is I did with all that promise that my life once held.

Isn't that video games generally brah?

I felt like IV was a strange step backward.

I just killed Alduin in Skyrim. It's the whole point of the damn game and nothing happens afterwards. All I really wanted was a "You bow to no man" or something. So now I'm trying to get all the Stones of Berenziah so I can get that crazy hat.

Skyrim is done for me. I quit about halfway through and just...that's it. Finis. Can't go back. Too much baggage.

I'm thinking of grabbing up this UFC game on the XBOX live.

Used to play the first one in the office. Somehow the company decided getting xbox 360's was a good idea. We had a tourney. You pick a dude and fight each other, and then you advance and fight the next dude. I'd do that shit again, if some y'll bought this. We even had a website set up. It was so stupid. No wonder that company lost its federal contracts.

I've never been a videogame person before, but I am all about the Skyrim. It was the flamethrower hand that reeled me in.

I went on a download binge tonight; not exactly sure why. Downloaded Team Fortress 2, Hearts of Iron 3, and Rome: Total War. I kind of want Crusader Kings too.
