New Tattoo thread

Nnnnno.  OM is cool as a religious symbol.  OM as a tattoo screams Orientalism.  If you have to ask whether or not it would be offensive you are not in the demographic that can get away with it.

Well I'm certainly well aware that it's not offensive to Hindus in general, and that, in fact, there is very little sense of "ownership" over the symbol given its nature. That was not what I meant by "offensive." Anyway, question asked and answered, teachers further consulted, gonna go ahead with it, some of y'all can think I'm an asshat and whatevs.

I don't think anyone thinks you personally are an asshat or anything close, because we know you and you are lovely, thoughtful and intelligent! What people were saying, correct me if I'm wrong, was that if they saw a stranger with that tat they might have an initial response of "asshat." Which, personally, I've met people I have thought were total dummies at first for superficial reasons and sometimes they turn out to be cool. I've met more people who I thought were waay too cool for me and end up being lame or boring.

Well to be fair, I did specifically ask for opinions from yoga practitioners, which is the audience I was concerned about. But anyway, no harm, no foul.

haha, quite true! in fact, I have vague plans to get more tats this year, all of which would almost surely meet most people's criteria of being ridiculous. which is fine; I ain't give a fuck, plus such people wouldn't be wrong. if you can't commit yourself to ridiculousness, what's the point of anything?

though there was a time when someone I knew had to treat a guy who was in a motorcycle accident when he showed up in the emergency room, and when they took his shirt off he was covered in swastika tats. the medical team gave him the bare minimum of morphine, ignored his requests for more, and pretty much made the right call IMHO.

Also, it's likely to be given to me by an unlisenced tattooist who is not even close to being a professional and isn't good at drawing

Also, while the tattooist is not that good at drawing, he's a hell of a tracer, if that assauges your fears at all, Miles.
