Following on from the Skip James discussion in the np thread, I thought we could have a place to discuss blues, and especially pre-war blues in more detail.

Having said that, I myself don't really know much at all about the subject! With the help of a few blogs and websites, notably the imperious Honey, Where You Been So Long? (which, amongst its many triumphs, once posted a mix featuring about 30 different versions of "Stagger Lee"), I've just about managed to scratch the surface.

To get the ball rolling, here's one of several 45-minute mixes I've made, with a few of my favourite discoveries. It's all pretty random, and looking at it now it's also biased towards female performers. I really think some of the stuff people like Trixie Smith and Lucille Bogan were doing was amazingly subversive.

Anyway, here's the link, and here's the track listing.

Trixie Smith

01 - Ozella Jones - I Been A Bad Bad Girl (Prisoner Blues)
02 - Trixie Smith - You Gotta Beat me To Keep Me
03 - Bumble Bee Slim - If Blues Was Whisky
04 - Lucille Bogan - New Way Blues
05 - Skip James - Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues
06 - Lil Green - Why Don't You Do Right
07 - Lucille Bogan - Coffee Grindin' Blues
08 - Merline Johnson - Dont You Make Me High
09 - Weaver and Beasley - Soft Steel Piston
10 - Georgia White - Was I Drunk
11 - Precious Bryant - You Don't Want Me No More
12 - Precious Bryant - Baby Please Come Home To Me
13 - Blind Willie Johnson - Dark Was The Night (Cold Was The Ground)
14 - Tudie Wells - Uncle Sam Blues

"If the River Was Whiskey" by Charlie Poole is currently my favourite song in the whole world. I guess that's country blues, or somethin'.

I remember those mixes of yours from a while back, Nick. They were ace.

Well, that's the most rational explanation I can come up with for their presence on my hard disk.

Oh wait, I can only find one - but it is the same one you posted again now. No harm in reposting, in any case!

I have a couple of other mixes, if anyone would like to hear them, but it's all freely and legally available at that pre-warblues.org site.

I'd be interested in what people think about some of those songs/lyrics up there too, especially 'You Gotta Beat Me To Keep Me' and, ahem, 'New Way Blues'.

That's very close to the current backup PF for the Orlando Magic, Glen "Big Baby" Davis.

I agree! So I decided to use Yojimbo Monkey Internet instead of my real name and got the best possible blues name--Washboard Gumbo Malone.
