I suppose it's only weird in the sense that it's quite a departure from his techno-ish roots. But anyway, it's good.

NP: Save Everything, the first album by Shipping News.

I found out about them through a Wikipedia, etc post-rock fugue, following Jeff Meuller from June of 44 and Rodan. This has much the feel of mid-period June of 44.

Shipping News was a great band that I don't think ever got quite the recognition they deserved.

Hey everyone, have you heard this awesome song by Bob Dylan? It speaks for me right now.

Did I tell you guys that I only started to listening to Dylan at the age of 24 or something? Think of all those years I could have been listening to Blonde on Blonde.

It's bizarre - despite loving Dylan for years, this song never did it for me. All it took was someone personally meaningful to address the song to - i.e. my homeless DXM addict brother, who had every fucking chance in the world - and it became the greatest song ever.

Rolling Stone was right.

Played as an ode to my father who passed away late last night. He loved this stuff but it's only been in the last couple of years that I've come to enjoy the pre-rock English folk he made us sing as kids. At some point tonight I'll be playing Holst's Planet Suite which was his favourite. But for the time being I'll sit here with a glass of wine and Shirley Collins spinning on the record player.

I'm so sorry, kdsb. My thoughts are with you and yours. I think that's a lovely way to honor your father's life. It seems that his appreciation for music, whatever the genre, has rubbed off some on his son.

Inga Copeland and Dean Blunt (AKA Hype Williams) - Black Is Beautiful

I actually quite like that emperors-new-clothes feel that some music plays on. That idea that someone's actually taking the piss and fobbing it off to music nerds and hipsters as highbrow art. This album and the "Kelly Price W8 Gain" ep both put that idea to rest in regards Hype Williams. I've had this album for a couple of weeks but only tonight has it taken hold. I've played it 3 times and it's getting better each listen. They've cut out some of the ear niggling noise that sat around the edges of their previous recordings while still retaining a hazy nondescript aesthetic. You should all give it a go.

Battles Dross Glop

I never listen to remix albums usually, but this is one that feels almost as interesting if not more than the original (which I like a lot to begin with).

Ben Vida - Esstends Esstends Esstends (PAN)

Been coming back to this lately, another of the great PAN releases this year. It's in the Keith Fullerton Whitman area, but the electronic squeals, buzzes and pings are a bit more controlled, and there's more use of the way the sounds are distributed spatially - you can feel them zipping around in front and behind you when you play it on earphones. Nice album preview soundcloud here.

great PAN releases this year.

The SND/NHK split is my number one springtime jam. I should get around to these other albums...

Have you heard the NHK Koyxeи album? I'm pretty sure you'd love that.

I am listening to Anaïs Mitchell's Hadestown, which I think I discovered coming from reading about Pepe Deluxé's Queen of the Wave. Halfway through, but pretty excited about it. Pretty varied, kind of sounds like if later Tom Waits' experimentation had remained more firmly entrenched in earlier Tom Waits' general aesthetic. Or, I don't know, something. She has a new one, too, which I am also keen on trying.

Hadestown is great, I also highly recomment The Brightness, was spinning it yesterday in fact. Not heard the new one yet though, I'll have to catch it soon...

The MBV remasters. I'm loving it except for Loveless which they screwed up. The track sequences aren't cut right (your hear the next song on the previous for half a second), they mislabeled the discs and there's a glitch on What You Want on the analogue tape version.

I've been listening to the EPs 1988-1991 today.  Great stuff--I'm amazed that it took me until now to hear all of it.  Definitely planning on buying the vinyl version when it comes out.  I'm curious about the LPs too, because according to KS the represses I have were taken from the CD and not the original master tapes.

I'm listening to the new Spinto Band album on Spotify. It's fun! I have no idea why a 2nd-to-3rd tier indie pop band like this would care enough to release a sophomore album 7 years after their debut, but I'm glad they did. I've kept an eye on them ever since their "Oh Mandy" single way back when. That stubborn little ditty was one of my favorite pop singles of the decade, and the first album wasn't bad either. Here they are again!

Andrea Belfi - Wege (Room 40)

I previously came across Andrea Belfi through his Pulses & Places  collaboration with Machinefabriek in 2009. Wege consists of 4 slippery and complex experiments in percussion and rhythm, and it's mastered by Guiseppe Ielasi with predictable attention to detail. Cool beans say I.

Nick, I kid you not, I woke up last night and couldn't get back to sleep. As I was laying there flopping over left and right, I kept hearing the 2nd sentence in the above graf in my head, like an earworm.

CONCLUSION: Even though I do not always follow-up on your recommendations, your description of them is music in itself. Most excellent black ink, octopus!
