Is she as good as Bob Dylan says?

I'm new to it all, but I like these home recordings much more than what I've heard from her studio albums (apparently she herself hated going into the studio). Worth checking, definitely.

There seemed to be a lot of negativity about this upon release so it took me a while to get around to picking it up. They are all wrong. It's fucking great.

Got some bluegrass CDs at my dad's last weekend. This one's a keeper:
Dry Branch Fire Squad
-
Fertile Ground
I've seen them at festivals before, and they get a lot of mileage out of playing the gullible ol' rubes, sort of Beverly Hillbillies X Madox Bros & Rose. So, another quality white minstrel act.

So the new Black Dice album is a joy.
Pigs
in particular is a cracker.

I like everything Black Dice do, but I also feel their most interesting stuff is behind them now, sadly.

This is some of the better stuff they've made in recent times for me. I've always had mixed feelings about them but there's a real sense of fun with this album that I'm enjoying.

Been kind of playing this non-stop since this conversation. I'm very easily-led.

More bluegrass from my dad's. He's the sort of guy who can't pass up a 2 CDS FOR LESS THAN THE PRICE OF 1 deal. Amazingly, this anthology rules. It's like honey on the vine, if there was such a thing.
EDIT: So I googled it, and there IS such a thing. Except it's the title of a really bad song!

Lee Hazlewood - The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes & Backsides (1968-71)
The highlight from a whole bunch of stuff purchased on Record Store Day.

Damn. I was gonna wait until I saw the Actress album in the store but I'm downloading it now as I don't want to wait until next pay-day knowing you guys are on this already.
In the meantime I just finished my first playthru of this:
Record store day release based somewhat loosely around solo guitar. There's some real gems here. Nicely packaged to look like an oversized matchbook. Get it if you see it.

Guys the new Pepe Deluxe album is amazing. Everything I want in a record (today). Psychedelic concept pop soundtrack to a nonexistent movie about Atlantis.

Someone at work was just talking about Actress yesterday! Her boyfriend, who also works here, started some record label with Actress that's now apparently really successful.

That's
Werk Discs!
. They haven't put too much out, but they did Zomby's first album, I think.

I didn't buy anything at RSD -- I went two different places, and one of them actually had the Uncle Tupelo singles box, but man, I've got a European vacation coming up in a couple weeks and I don't need to be throwing out $45 on fetish objects. I always find myself disappointed on Record Store Day.
Anyway, when I got home, the new Doug Paisley 10" was waiting on me!
I'm listening now, and it's fantasic. You can stream it here, if you want:

Yeah. Ben from my work started Werk Discs. He's pretty nice. I don't know him too well.

I'm also at the beginning of my Scott Walkerdom; I've been listening to
Scott 3
and
4
a lot in the last few months, but I want to spend more time at the beginning before heading into
Tilt
and
The Drift
. I tried
The Drift
when it came out but it was a little much for me. I'm hoping that more grounding will help that album make more sense, though.
To Arlo, Marinus and all the other Scott Walker listeners on here, there's a very interesting Ian Penman article re-eavaluating his 1969-72 period in The Wire this month. It's an extract from a 20,000 word essay that appears in a new book called
'No Regrets: Writings On Scott Walker'
, published by Orion this month.
They also say that there's a new album due out on 4AD this year.

Ooooh! Both for the article and the new album. As I've said before, I'm somewhat disturbed by the lengths I'd be willing to go to to see Walker perform
The Drift
as a cabaret.

Breaking forum rules for the evening to say that one day, Get Lonely will be held up as the peak of human achievement. It's a wonderful, wonderful thing.
