Lower Dens, "Nootropics"

"Brains" is a real ripper.  I love this band when their songwriting is solid.

I am listening to Anaïs Mitchell's Hadestown, which I think I discovered coming from reading about Pepe Deluxé's Queen of the Wave. Halfway through, but pretty excited about it. Pretty varied, kind of sounds like if later Tom Waits' experimentation had remained more firmly entrenched in earlier Tom Waits' general aesthetic. Or, I don't know, something. She has a new one, too, which I am also keen on trying.

For serious this is an amazing album. It's a folk opera about Orpheus and Eurydice. I think Mitchell plays Eurydice, Ani DiFranco plays Persephone, that Bon Hiver guy plays probably Orpheus? I don't know, I haven't really been following the story, but he plays somebody. It's Mitchell's show, though. I guess it got staged at some point.

The point is, it's really good. If your name is fishjim, you should really check this one out.

I haven't seen that. I'll get on that immediately. Or somewhat later than immediately, but soon.

We saw Anais Mitchell in a tiny club in London, prior to the recording of Hadestown, and she was SO excited that she'd managed to get the cast for the songs that she wanted. So cute. Can't remember who plays Hades, but he's great.

great PAN releases this year.

The SND/NHK split is my number one springtime jam. I should get around to these other albums...

Have you heard the NHK Koyxeи album? I'm pretty sure you'd love that.

The SND side of that split has being getting a shit-load of play recently. Which is a little surprising considering I almost ignored that track first when I got the record. Mark Fell of SND is having great year so far with the that split, and what it looks like will be a series of 12"s on/as (?) Sensate Focus. I also just ordered his collab 12" with someone called DJ Sprinkles (awful name) which from the right-ups is sounding promising.

I'm with Nick on the NHK Koyxeи album. Easily my most played record of the year so far.

Karen Dalton - 1966, and in particular the song 'Reason To Believe'. Keep having a strong urge to hear this lately.

Even amongst kraut-heads La Düsseldorf rarely seem to get their due. They're often considered a footnote. But these are a couple seriously amazing records. "Viva" (the song) alone stands as an exceptional example of ecstatic Rock n Roll that could raise rooftops.

They have a vinyl copy of Viva for $25 (I think) up at Records Etcetera in Northcote, if you don't have a copy already.   Good records!

http://www.npr.org/2012/05/20/152853333/first-listen-the-walkmen-heaven?sc=tw&cc=twmp

NPR is streaming the new Walkmen album, and I'm currently taking advantage of it. Sounding really solid so far, and surprisingly mellow. No real feedback to speak of, a lot of pretty guitar playing and actual singing-singing.

That said, I'm always a little upset when a band featuring one of my favorite drummers releases an album like this, where the drummer takes a backseat (or a vacation). Spoon did it with Transference not too long ago. But these songs are so damn pleasant so far, I'm having trouble getting worked up about it.

"Song for Leigh," in particular, already feels like a classic.

I have the 4 Men With Beards reissue so I'm sorted but I've not been out to Records Etcetera though. Any good?

Yeah, it's a small shop, but it has a favorable percentage of good used records at fair prices.  Last time I was there they had a bunch of British folk (I got Fotheringay for $10 and John Martyn's Inside Out for probably $30--ouch--but in excellent condition) and Viva Hate for $25.  The guy that runs it is really friendly and has a bunch of turntables and other audio equipment for pretty good prices. It's only open Thursday-Saturday, though.

And speaking of record stores, what are the best ones for used records, outside of Missing Link?  I'm trying to find a good spot to find heaps of $10-15 records that I might actually want to buy.  Records etcetera and that place in St Kilda on Chapel Street (which I think is called something cheesy like "record collector paradise") are probably the best spots I've found so far.  I kind of want to check out that Dixon's place on Brunswick street in Fitzroy.  I should probably check out Heartland as well, I remember them having a good selection of used stuff, at least 10 years ago.

There seem to be lots of shops that sell new records, but finding quality used records for a decent price in this town is proving to be challenging.

Listening to Daughn Gibson - All Hell

I think someone else mentioned it. It's good. Some Climate of Hunter Scott Walker vibe with some countryish flourishes. Which I find interesting because I've drunkenly argued that Tilt and The Drift are ultimately Country and Western records. Smile

And speaking of record stores, what are the best ones for used records, outside of Missing Link?

I'm not overly sure either. I've heard great things about Liquorice Pie and a couple of others out in Prahran. Greville Records has a good reputation. Liquorice Pie apparently focuses a lot on prog and psyche so I really need to get out there one weekend. Do you have one of those Melbourne record store fold-out/flyer things? Ask next time you're in a store, they should have some. If not I''ve got a couple lying around the house. It gives a pretty good run down of what's out there. I need to do some exploring outside of my standard loop of  Missing Link, Polyester, Wooly Bully and that place up by the Vic markets (Heart..something?).

np: Iibiis - Rooge
I took a punt and ordered their new record ("Hespherides") from Boomkat as I was ordering a few other things. I thought it worth buying a download of their first album to get some context. This is great. Slightly hippy trance techno with a lot of droning and almost lo-fi fuzz. Strong Boredoms influence.

Yeah, I was just at Heartland this weekend.  They have some good stuff, but they annoy me by putting all the cheap stuff on the floor under the racks so you have to get down on your hands & knees to browse.  I also checked out the metal record store up Peel street called Kaaos records, which was hilarious.  All vinyl is $49.95, evidently.

Greville and Licorice Pie are definitely on my list.  I've walked by Greville a few times but haven't made it in.

The map you're talking about is this, right?

NP: Long Blondes, "Nostalgia"--from a $15 find at Heartland.

Off work, enjoying the sun/garden, with lastfm throwing up some nice juxtapositions on random. So far it's given me:

Lucky Dragons > Max Richter > Depeche Mode > Nick Drake > Grouper > Marsen Jules > Monolake > Roy Montgomery > Deerhoof > Black Dice > Bob Marley & The Wailers > Karen Dalton > Augustus Pablo > My Bloody Valentine

It's a pity though that (like Spotify), about 40% of my library isn't available to play online.

Sleater-Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One

This, btw, is also an answer to the question 'What albums can't you help but chant the chorus of the title track to whenever you see it', which should indicate both how much I like it and how much it sticks in your memory. Goddamnit, guys, remember how great S-K were?

I'm with you 100%. Love this album.

Amazingly, I only just learned that Carrie Brownstein and Portlandia are one & the same. Not sure how I feel about that. Haven't seen the series yet, but wasn't planning to, either.

I still think CB gets major props for her NPR spot on Garotas Suecas a few years ago. I got to see them at the Uptown in Oakland a year later, and my experience was a lot like hers. I lost my mind.
