Muse were cool for about five minutes but then they carried on existing and quickly became about as cool as Coldplay. I mean, how cool something is obviously has nothing to do with how good it is, but that's what I know about how cool Muse have ever been.

I considered them/liking them cool circa 10 years ago; I was somewhat of an anglophile, went further into the progressive rock than most and was a big Queen fan - they were almost made for me.

I was also warned by more than one British guy that they were overblown and overhyped and overdone... and started to see that as they hit the States in 2004 (including playing mid-day at Coachella) ... and was about done with them by the time they toured again in 2005. I rather enjoyed those concerts but got sick of hearing "Time Is Running Out" when no-one seemed to care about "Sober," "Hyper Music," and "Micro Cuts," etc. I don't think I've heard much of anything they've done since, skipped them entirely at Coachella in 2010 and can't handle their stuff anymore.

But I am not going to make fun of someone for listening to Muse. I might cringe more at My Chemical Romance... but that may just be because I know their music less. Neither of these should matter and you, Bernard, should listen to what you like! Though if you're looking for a serious commitment, a band you can love for many years... I would recommend against Muse.

That's an excellent rundown, mtmcc, thank you!

Again, to reassure anybody who's worried about it, I am not needing know if they are cool so that I can make a determination about liking them. My liking is going to be based on the enjoyment I derive. I am interested in finding out how much flack I might get and of what sort. I like having my counter-mockery ready in advance, though in a pinch, I can improvise.

I think "What? I like English bands now." should suffice. No need to elaborate further.
