That's pretty cool that you can get Anchor Steam in the UK, Chet, I like that stuff a lot 'cause it's often one of the few "good" beers available at bars with shit beer selections.

Everything about Blue Moon's labeling is designed to mislead the unknowing consumer.

Decent folk, too. They've hosted a few events to benefit the npo I work for... Makes sense - can't make good beer without clean water.

And on the same tip as Jim's comment about Anchor Steam, Brooklyn Lager is often available around here even if a bar only has a bunch of shitty macrobrews, so it's a reliable favorite for the area, just as Yuengling was when I lived in Philly.

The taste, unfortunately, confirms its provenance.  Ugh.

I had a lengthy conversation last weekend about how retarded budweiser is in their marketing of their new beers. Budweiser Autumn Wheat! This will help us win over those hipsters in the craft beer market!

No! The only way you're going to get into that market is by faking it!

The worst are bars withe nothing on tap but Stella and Blue Moon. Also sports and music venues. Thought it was pretty cool though at Camden Yards they have Flying Dog and Heavy Sails (Frederick MD, and Baltimore)

I don't think they're trying to get the craft beer market, though - I think they're trying to create the illusion of choice and quality in order to occupy more taps and keep Miller-swilling phillistines (swillistines?) from wandering off the macrobrew reservation.

If you think Blue Moon is bad, you should get your hands on some Shock Top

Thought it was pretty cool though at Camden Yards they have Flying Dog and Heavy Sails (Frederick MD, and Baltimore)

Is this in a specific section? I love both those breweries but didn't see any signs of them when I was up there last summer. Going in June and would definitely like to know.

Man, Heavy Seas has what has got to be the dumbest naming schema in craft beer. Their brewery is actually called Clipper City Brewing Co.; Heavy Seas is the brand name for all of their beer. Within the Heavy Seas brand they have three "fleet" designations, Clipper, Pyrate and Mutiny. The Pyrate fleet, which is the most widely-distributed and the one with which people are mostly familiar, has seven different brews in it, three of which are IPAs, with Loose Cannon being the most well-known. So when you drink a Loose Cannon, you are technically drinking a Heavy Seas Pyrate Fleet Loose Cannon IPA by Clipper City Brewing Co. For a long, long time I didn't realize that Heavy Seas and Clipper City were the same operation. They need some fucking brand management!

As someone who supports overindulgence both in nautical themes and arcane classification schemata, I wholeheartedly approve of it. But yeah, from a trying-to-promote-your-wares standpoint, it's probably not a great thing. I definitely always think of their company as "Heavy Seas," not "Clipper City."

Aiiight, I'll look into it. They actually have a pretty good craft beer selection at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, but you have to go to one of a couple specific concessions to find them.

I actually kind of like Blue Moons. And Shock Tops. I will pick plenty of beers over them but I like the style better than lagers, so, really, they had me won over until I found out from whence they came.

Had some beer nerds over for a little tasting last night. It was great! Hadn't done anything like that in a while due to general reduction in drinking. Had a few amazing things: my buddy Jason's "experimental" brown ale in which he steeped an amount of chai at flameout was *incredible*. Really subtly spiced, and he mashed it super high so it had this silky, luxurious quality to it. I pulled an Avery 18 out of the closet that had been in there since last summer; their Rye Saison was just phenomenal, with a really complex and structured malt profile with just the right amount of rye spiciness. A little lacking in the phenol/funk department, though; didn't have a huge farmhouse quality to it. Also of note was one called Resurrection from the Brewer's Art, a double with more huge and complicated malt flavors, though somewhat lacking in Belgian character. Last up were a few bottles of Duck Rabbit, a barleywine and a RIS that were both surprisingly dry and subtle, given that they were both 9%+.

Oh yeah also had a can of Six Point Apollo, their summer wheat. A little tangier/more sour than I generally like in my summer quaffing ales, but quite tasty.

What did you think of the Duck Rabbit (guessing you had the milk stout)?

It was actually their Rabid Duck (or whatever) Russian Imperial Stout. Both bottles had been cellared since like 2009 and were absolutely fantastic, though both just a bit thinner and drier than I would have expected.
