I bought 5 bottles of Rittenhouse this weekend. Turns out that while they do not sell it at the Heaven Hill distillery (where they make it), they do sell it at an awesome liquor store near there that has the best bourbon and rye selection I've ever seen in a shop. They give you 10% off if you buy over $100 in liquor, so. Yeah.
I also bought the Knob Creek single barrel (super hot but really good once you had a fair bit of water) and the Double Oaked Woodford (also needed a little water to open up, but only a little, and is quite tasty), as well as a ton of other liquor. My friend who was visiting is either a good or bad influence, depending on how you look at it.
We drank a lot of beer too, and my favorite discovery may have been how good Bell's Porter is, which I'd somehow never had before. Also tried the Jolly Pumpkin Baudelaire Saison which I wanted to like (and I like rose flavored things much of the time), but it doesn't lie when it references decay on the bottle, since all I got was sour rotting roses. My friend liked it though.

I seem to have entirely run out of staples. Sure, a glass of port is nice, and a Cynar and soda hits the spot, but why do I not have any goddamn bourbon in the house?
I should try to see what sort of cocktail I can make with what I have.
[edit] Actually, the Cynar and port would be quite good with rye, which is, as mentioned, a staple that I am lacking.

i got some 21st amendment "monks blood". their beers are pretty prevalent around here and most are fairly interesting, but rarely great. at 9.99 a 4 pack i was going to go for something else (the sierra nevada full cone hop whatever was the same price), but then the grocery store booze lady snuck up behind me and started going on about how it's the best thing to happen to beer since a yeast shat out some alcohol, so i went for it.
beer advocate doesn't seem particularly impressed with it, but we'll see how it goes.
has anyone else had their beer? apparently it's from san francisco, but i had never seen it until i moved to portland from la.

i liked their black ipa or whatever it is alright. their regular ipa has a kind of weird taste (its been a while, so i can't remember what exactly). i'm not sure i've had anything else.
there's enough good local beer around here that i don't really have any reason to buy more of their stuff. in fact i'll be getting free beer at two different parties tonight...hopworks is sponsoring the first and ninkasi the second.

Also I had some Ninkasi that was totally excellent when we were in Portland in October. The best beer I had that week was from Amnesia on Mississippi. I can't find my tasting notes at the moment, but I remembering being *really* impressed by their ESB and their DIPA, which was primarily hopped with Chinook, I believe.

ninkasi is always solid (and reasonably priced). i don't think i've had any amnesia beers, but i've been wanting to stop in that place.
i just had one of the monk's bloods...as suspected, it tastes like very little for how much crap they put in there. it's not offensive, but it's pretty boring.

Four beers last night, followed by a splitting headache, waves of nausea and sweaty unease this morning. What. the. fuck.

More than you could possibly drink.
You'd have to drink 2-8 L a day to reach commonly prescribed dosages. You'd have to drink several orders of magnitude more than that to get to a toxic dose of quinine.

Yeah. Apparently the LD 50 for guinea pigs is taking quinine orally 1800 mg/kg for pure quinine. Tonic water has 83 mg/liter, max, according to Wikipedia. If the human LD 50 is similar to the rodent LD 50 (a stretch, but probably a decent starting point), then a 80 kg person would need about 1735 liters of tonic water to have a dose that is likely to kill them. In other words, you will die of fluid intake before the quinine is even an issue.
That said, if you drank a mere 43 liters of it as a pregnant woman who weighs 60 kg, then you'd be putting your fetus at risk apparently of a quite a few problems, since the dose at which it does that is way lower (60 mg/kg). Again though, if you are drinking that much tonic water, I'm guessing the gin is going to be a bigger issue...

Additional testing was conducted and confirmed that the yeast strain was not Rogue’s yeast.
That would have been my guess.
Also, wow. Reading that makes me want to take a shower and shampoo the little bit of stubble on my face even though I showered like four hours ago.

On the other hand, if it had been Brewdog doing this, they would have just been dipping their dicks in the beer and then trying to get it up to 40% ABV

Yeah, that sucks! I think it unnecessary unless it's for dire health reasons. But taking time off never hurts, either.
I had the best Geuze I've ever tasted last night:
http://www.cantillon.be/br/3_101
Incredible & incredibly complex sour fruit flavors, wood, etc. The driest, cleanest finish I think I've ever experienced in any beer, let alone a lambic.
