I haven't had a drink in a month, and don't plan on doing so any time. I obvs have some problems with getting churlish now and then on alcohol, and avoiding that alone is worth quitting for me at this point. In the meantime, it's pretty easy to unlock your inner fun guy in social situations once you open yourself up to it. I dunno if that's a concern of yours or anything, but that's what I've found.

As for the health and money stuff, it feels pretty good to go out with friends for a few hours, pay 5 dollars in tips for some club sodas, remember everything and wake up fresh as a kitten the next day.

Cutting way, way down on drinking was a really good move for me, all around.

I go in cycles.  I slowly, over the course of months, start drinking more and more each night, and working out less and less.  Then I'll be like, wtf, I'm sick of feeling like shit, and I'll cut way back, start working out regularly, etc.  That'll last a little a while, and then, slowly, over the course of another 4 months or so, I'll start drinking more and more, working out less and less, etc...

Agreed with Iggy and Jeb.

Though in spirit of the thread... I've been drinking! Wine!

Drinking to get drunk is bad news. Not that I don't still do it occasionally, but learning/thinking/caring more about what you're drinking and not viewing it as a means to social lubrication or complete oblivion is a great starting point for a healthy relationship with alcohol.

I agree with this, absolutely. The problem for me, though--and the reason why it's been fairly easy for me to cut way down--is that I have started getting fairly vicious hangovers from as few as one or two beers. Hard stuff doesn't seem to affect me the same way, but I've gotten fairly good at limiting myself to no more than a couple drinks a week. I really try to not drink to get drunk, though, like you said, it does happen occasionally.

Cf is the trendsetter of LPTJ-NY and I gotta feeling you guys all gonna be on the wagon within a few weeks, going to trendy "temperance boutiques" in Brooklyn and speaking ill of us fire-drinkers. I'll be in New York at the end of July, was hoping to get hammered with some of you. I guess we could play Catan at Chipotle instead.

There is a part of me that says hey neat science and there is another part of me that says there is only so far down the damn rabbit hole I will go http://beerpulse.com/2012/06/rogue-ales-to-create-beer-using-yeast-from-brewmasters-beard-follicles/

As it turns out, I am drinking a beer brewed with this yeast right now. From his beard to mine I guess

You should cultivate his beard yeast in your own beard. You can be a roving beard yeast farm. BRB need to vomit.

My county is safely in the More Beer category, and actually, Georgia as a whole fares significantly better than I would've predicted.

So I'm in the process of moving and I'm getting rid of some random stuff like my little practice drum kit. I sold it for $150 yesterday and the dude paid in cash.

Later, as I'm shoving things into boxes, I realize that once I've packed my booze, I can't drink it til it's unpacked. Might be nice to have a little stopgap to keep handy and available during the move, I think. Cash in my pocket, I walk across the street to the bottle shop.

I wanted scotch and I was poking around in the $40 range, nothing too fancy. I see they have a bottle of Ardmore Traditional Cask on sale for $29.99. Whoa. I'd never had it before, but at that price, I figure there's not much to lose. Fortunately, it's really not bad! Certainly the best $30 scotch I've ever had, and when you think about the fact that it was only about $8 more than a bottle of Dewar's, it's downright heavenly.

It's a young scotch, but they mature it a second time in old bourbon quarter casks, which gives it a nice creamy caramel smoothness. Just a little peat smoke on the backside. Pretty thick, nice to roll around. Man, I'm impressed!

I'm guessing they're almost out of it, though. I read somewhere that only 3,000 cases of it were made available and this was the last bottle they had at this shop. If you can find it on clearance, I recommend it.

So I am really enjoying both the Knob Single Barrel and the Double Oaked Woodford. I am also really really loving finally having the makings for Torontos including Rittenhouse. Hands down my favorite cocktail. My friend came over for what we termed DUDEBRO night (we are in a dept full of women, so we are each other's dude friends, even if strictly speaking, I am not a dude), and we drank Green Flash West Coast IPA, both bourbons, Dark and Stormiers (Barbancourt Aged Rum, Domain de Canton, lime), and Torontos, and also split a pint of Graeter's Bourbon Ball ice cream while watching movies with gratuitous violence. We have vowed to do this on a regular basis, because it was awesome.
