Might not be as pretty as that there Cloud City, but the City Museum in St. Louis is exactly what you have described. Also, dinosaurs.

I've been there! My family is from st. Louis! That place is really great and probably more what I had in mind for cloud city. The mirrors and junk are still cool though. Robin Young laid on the hype too thick maybe.
Good job pollo. Real proud a you.

City Museum rules. St. Louis kind of sucks but City Museum and a few other things make up for it.

My 2nd cousin didn't turn up at my grammom's memorial yesterday because he decided to stay home and play Diablo 3. He was living in his grandmother's house (she's my gma's sister-in-law, and they were best friends, so it was really important to her), which is in the same town as the cemetery, less than five minutes away.
Now he is kicked out of the house and spamming FB looking for places to stay. Don't let video games mess up your life

Sort of reminds me of how my sister skipped my cousin's wedding because they were throwing some dumbass Burner party. Priorities, people!

But I must admit that I laughed heartily when they told me why he never showed up.

That's pretty awful, but yeah, I laughed too.
My brother, the junkie, pulled a similar stunt over the holidays. After burning every bridge in Brooklyn, my mom bought him ticket to Los Angeles, where my 95-yr-old grandfather's in a nursing home. He'll probably die this year, but he's had a good life. Our extended family has been coming through L.A. this last year, staying at the house in Venice where my mom & her siblings grew up.
Rather than visiting my grandfather, my brother hung out at Venice Beach, presumably scoring pills & such, then coming home and drinking like a fish. One night my aunt, who was also visiting, heard my brother rattling around the house, opening drawers and cabinets. When she confronted him he said he was just "cleaning things up" and "getting organized". When she brought it up with my mom the next day, my brother got aggro & defensive, as he does anytime someone accuses him of the truth.
A week later he and my mom drove up to her place in Oregon, where he was installed in a guest room. It was mid-December. On Christmas Eve he was loaded on something - who the fuck knows what - and tore up the entire room, ripping everything off the walls and even slashing an old, stuffed, sentimental Snoopy doll my mom's kept around since we were kids. She and her husband kicked him out and put a restraining order against him, but also helped him find a shelter. Within a couple days he was kicked out for rifling through other people's bags.
When my mom and her husband were putting the guest room back together, they found some boxes of stuff from my grandfather's house. Except it was all junk, nothing that could be resold, and nothing that a grandson could conceivably get sentimental about.
He's 38.

Let's just agree that City Museum is awesome and leave it at that
I got to go to a wedding reception at City Museum once, and wander around it unsupervised, drunk, after dark. I think I ruined my clothes climbing around the weird underground grotto thing.

I didn't have much of an opinion on St. Louis until L came along. She used to live there and still calls it "home." She showed me the cool parts, i.e. The Loop/U-City. One night during a thanksgiving visit, we went barhopping with her old friends in a different area where all the buildings were short, made of brick, and contained awesome pubs -- one of which (
http://www.internationaltaphouse.com/soulard/index.php
) had more beers than I've ever seen.
These days, I think St. Louis is pretty rad.

yeah every time my mom and I go to st. louis we hang out in u city and webster groves, both totally cool parts of town. One of the best times I saw the gandalfs was at washington university! My gpa used to live in a suburb to the west of the city and his house was on this huge plot of co-owned land with turkeys and hills and woods. I have to go back soon, I haven't been since he died.

I spent part of a summer crashing at a friend's apartment just off Delmar in the loop / U City area. There were good things that happened but the bad outweighed the good. I kind of miss those friends too.

it always struck me as pretty odd that when I spent six months driving around the country and living in a minivan, Washington University was one of the easiest places to sneak a shower at. usually the moneyed places were trickier to beat, and state schools were the best bet. it's actually mostly because of the showers and the fact that I'd burned out and figured it was as good a place as any to recover that I spent a whole week camped in St. Louis. might've even been where I started reading Samuel Delany!
