I remember liking Hissing Fauna but man, then I wasn't really following what dude was up to with the newer shit, some kinda matronly woman drag transformation, but this new shit!... son, I'm all over this, been hitting this up

Shit is genius!

I haven't heard anything since Hissing Fauna. I'm not sure what to say about this. it's a bit overwhelming. It's like some fucked up cocaine fueled collaboration involving the guy from Hefner, My Chemical Romance and Kanye.

I took a big stride in the of Montreal discography for a while which culminated in
Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
when it just came out and seeing them on stage twice that year, plugged and unplugged. Haven't checked out anything since post-Fauna but I still have fondness for their earlier works and particularly the sugary and sweet
The Gay Parade
. This new song you linked is fun, though it won't trigger another run at of Montreal. It's a great band anyhow and I'm glad to know that you like their newer stuff.

I kinda hated
Hissing Fauna
. Last Of Montreal album I liked was
Satanic Panic
. I'd probably still rep for that and
The Gay Parade
(which, despite being totally not the kind of thing I'm in to, is a really great record).

Same! Although I would replace
The Gay Parade
-- which I considered a total sell-out back then -- with their first record,
Cherry Peel
(along with the EP which came out around the same time, the one with the title so embarrassing I'm not going to type it out ever again).

I liked everything through Hissing Fauna, and listened to about half of the next one before giving up.

The only thing I know from before Hissing Fauna is
Who Will Protect Big Oil
, which was kind of annoying.
Skeletal Lamping
took awhile to get into but I enjoyed, liked a few things from
False Priest
but gave up halfway through. I should probably listen to
Sunlandic Twins
if the other songs are like Wraith Pinned to the Mist because I fucking love that song. But really internet, which early one should I go for?
I'm not sure about this new one, I'll need to listen to it a few more times I think. Interesting though.

Now, of Montreal changed direction dramatically with
Satanic Panic in the Attic
in 2004 which was their first time dabbling in electro-pop that over time developed into the electro-dance-disco craziness of today. Before that they played indie pop that over time developed into a vaudeville-pop craziness with huge productions (over-produced some would say). So if you wanna check out
that
of Montreal, my favorite of those albums is their third,
The Gay Parade
, which is a weird and catchy indie-pop album with theatrical and vaudeville tendencies, if you want the purest indie-pop bass-guitar-drums album I would go with their debut
Cherry Peel
. But really, I'm a huge fan of their pre-electro era so to me you can't really go wrong with any LP or EP except for maybe
Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse
which is the album they went full-on pop-dementia, I like it though. A song from each album is linked.

I refused to listen to Hissing Fauna for years because of the title, and I don't think I was being overly dramatic at all.

The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy
Good album though.

ok, hissing fauna is a fantastic album. sunlandic was really good, too, but it doesn't really hold up in my opinion. skeletal lamping has some of my favorite musical moments ever. some of it is truly overwhelming in sound, but i don't really give a shit about "the songs" or whatever.
too often do i hear "of montreal went soft" from folks who also stopped listening at, like, satanic panic. i really don't dig a lot of what of montreal is now, but kevin barnes is still going hard as fuck. IMHO BROS

Yeah I mean, the guy deserves props. You hit it right on the head. Might not always be my cup of tea but dude is chasing his muse. Like, what if he had kept on making them Beatlesy songs. It'd be another Elf Power, right? But, nope, dude is still relevant. Arguably.

well, i tend to really dig all of his stuff since hissing fauna. i am a big fanboy of the music, but i can't stand going to the shows. it's that kind of thing i'm talking about not really digging. their website looks like it was made by apple and so does all of that shit they sell. too much kitsch surrounding the whole thing. i still want to buy that 100 dollar cassette release of their discog. i almost did a month ago or so.. but i was too strong! i will probably break down. i've been on a major cassette tip lately.

The thing is, though...once you have it, something that pretty, you aren't likely to regret buying it.
