I like how cbs harbors both a half-remembered mishmash of various conspiracy theories involving corporate malfeasance and an abiding love for Ron Paul

So here's a fun game to play.

It's called, guess what the proportion of Catholic Church contributions:Catholic Charities:: Federal government contributions: Catholic Charities, is.

Yeah, fuck Catholic Charities. Last year they closed their orphanages in IL rather than let gay couples adopt. Clearly the focus is on charity!

BTW,

The dioceses of the Catholic church provide 150M to Catholic Charities.

The federal government provides 2.9B to Catholic Charities.

So it's a 1:20 ratio.

And if they wanted to be a church, all that 2.9B goes away.

Have I made myself unclear? Go ahead and read what I said again so I don't have to repeat myself. There is no conspiracy theory involved. We have been robbed of our right to privacy, it no longer exists, and the wife of the Monsanto lobbyist has since gone on to try and outlaw private gardens. No word of a lie! She wants home vegetable gardens to be punishable by a million dollar fine, is pushing for them to require the same lab safety testing as commercial operations. How unreal is this reality? That particular couple needs to be dragged into the streets and beaten, hung from lampposts.

Related to DCDave's statistics: I really don't understand the "religious liberty" argument vis-a-vis birth control at all, can someone explain it to me? Am I just a partisan hack who picks and chooses how to interpret the First Amendment or is the argument in fact as bullshit as I think it is? I am serious.

The argument is bullshit, but it's supposed to go: many people have a sincere religious objection to contraception; the rule would obligate them to provide contraception, in contravention of their sincere objection; this abrogates their ability to live according to their sincere religious beliefs; ergo, the rule would contravene people's freedom to hold religious beliefs.

It's worth noting that this isn't a First Amendment argument, this is rooted in the main text of the Constitution itself, freedom of conscience rather than freedom of expression. The problem, of course, is that providing funding for contraception isn't something done to you, but to other people. Nobody is forcing anybody to take contraception. Just the mere fact that you object to what other people do doesn't mean you have any right to abrogate what is available to them. And that is what exempting contraception from employer-funded healthcare does - it harms the employees on account of the beliefs of the employer. And that is a paradigmatic example of having your life interfered with on behalf of someone else's beliefs.

New Zealand is a classless, racially harmonious society predicated on 'mateship' between all its people... oh, I guess not.
Columnist calls that New Zealand's national day, marking the joining of Maori and British settlers in one nation, be scrapped because it's too good for the brown people. Then goes on two or three separate rants, more befitting of a senile man slipping into dotage than of an award-winning columnist in the paper of record.

They do a lot of great work, absolutely.  What's depressing is that, as an organization, the great work they do is less important to them than punishing unapproved sexytime.

I certainly don't doubt the fact that corporate interests don't always align with societal interests. I would just gently suggest that if you hate multinational corporations to the point of advocating gruesome ends for their higher-level employees, that you might consider taking a second look at Ron Paul's economic ideology before hitching to that particular wagon

It's unfortunately also a bit of a big deal. That is the paper of record, not some equivalent of Slate or even the Wall Street Journal, and he undoubtedly voices the opinion of a large amount of people.

It is Paul Holmes. The man is insane. What is more amazing than anything he says is that he still has any sort of public forum in which to say it.

The woman announcing Palin at CPAC just said that CPAC had been "Romneyed, Santorumed..."

Sigh.

I swear this is typical of many, many columnists in this country. Rosemary McLeod, Michael Laws, Chris Trotter, Paul Holmes, Kerre Woodham...at least they put Garth George out to pasture.
