In other
Catholics being dicks news
, here's one about the longtime music director of Charlotte's largest Catholic congregation getting fired for marrying his partner in NY. The kicker: he has Parkinson's and will lose his insurance, but it's all legal 'cause of that January Supreme Court ruling that affirmed a church's "right" to freely discriminate against salaried employees.

Ayo, fuck Cardinal Wuerl. The only "religious liberty" he's talking about is the ability to impose his religion on other people. Fuck that and fuck him.
Yeah, this exactly.

Yeah I agree with you all, this complete bullshit. Hopefully religion will have gradually phased out of civilization come, say the 24th century.

I am way outsider on topics of Jebus but I seriously don't understand why there hasn't been, like, a mass exodus of liberal-minded catholics over to the episcopal church

There are too many batshit crazy stuff in the bible to justify believing in it. liberal minded christians just exclude the huge chunks of the bible that are abhorrent and focus on the good stuff, which admittedly does exist too. But as soon as they're doing that they should go all the way and exclude the whole thing and stop lying to themselves. Religion is just mythology with a fancier name.

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing - if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety

I can't comprehend a rational way to defend the Bible so quoting it directly is the best way to point out its flaws. I admit, it's really too easy. But it does seem to offend people.

What is he doing that's embarrassing, exactly? I mean the path he's taking is kinda trollsy but that doesn't make passages like the one he posted any less stupid.

yeah... i basically feel like anybody who believes the bible word for word isn't worth talking to about it because why bother? i used to figure those boats were worth rocking because it'd be helping them towards illumination, it seemed like a basic social responsibility, but when a mormon roommate said that she believed that ancient scientists made dinosaurs i laughed until i cried. then realized she was serious and i quickly and quietly amended my policy of ever trying to reason with an unreasonable person. the dead sea scrolls are mom's spaghetti to anybody who wants to know. telling people things they don't want to know doesn't really serve anybody's interests and those who force the issue are just providing evidence of their own social hard-hardheadedness. you're better than that, baby babar! we all know diehard bible thumpers are weirdos.
also: you see, jm? people around the world do assume that americans are generally christian fundamentalists with a poor grasp of reality, i'm afraid. bam!

Well, for starters, he's suggesting that if the Bible isn't literally true, it's worthless. That's like not reading fiction because, you know, it didn't happen. Or not reading poetry.

I disagree as to why he's being embarrassing. A bible held out as true or extrinsically valid obviously depends on objective truth value in a way that fiction doesn't.
What's embarrassing is, like, "HERE'S THIS BIBLICAL QUOTE THAT IS REPUGNANT OR NONSENSICAL, I WIN." That works in a universe where the only people you need to convince are other atheists, tabula rasa people with no actual opinions, or fundamentalist Christian
robots
who beep out "
does not compute
" and explode when confronted with evidence of biblical tomfoolery. Hopefully our standard of discourse is a bit beyond that.

Quick, Babar, no googling. What's the Bible story here? And why might it matter to 3 Jewish rappers from Brooklyn?

Yeah, but even St. Augustine in the 4th century thought fundamentalists were batshit.
