Well, basically those shows are all low-rated as fuck; they would've been cancelled on any other network long ago. They're in last place, so they gotta try something at some point.  They picked up a shitload of new comedies they'll try to launch.

The reason they're getting the abbreviated seasons at all is because the networks (other than CBS) have finally gotten to the point, in the age of on-demand, hulu, etc etc where you just can't air many repeats anymore and get any kind of audience. So they'll do a year-round launch cycle where they'll plug in those shows to fill gaps in the schedule.

But, uh...it's weird to me that those shows are low rated.

I guess it's probably because of the general group of people I am around all the time.  I could shoot a spitball at no fewer than 5 people who identify themselves as "improvisers" from right here.  Chicago.

(Also, though, I got street cred from someone whose apartment I was looking at by pseudo-name dropping your wife/talking about how much goddamned WORK performing seems to be when I saw her closet full of burlesque/belly dancing shit. What a city.)

haha, do you know her performance name? We probably know her, or know people she performs with.  Or maybe not. So many burlesque performers in this city now, what with Gorilla Tango putting on a billion shitty-paying shows with open auditions.

edit: And yeah, all those shows get between 2.8-3.5 million viewers consistently.  Community, for example, is up against Big Bang Theory, which gets about 13 million, and American Idol, which gets 15 million or more, depending on the week. Do you know ANYONE who watches "Missing" on ABC?  Even that gets 6 million in the same time slot.

I wonder if the people who watch Community/30 Rock/Parks and Rec are just generally the sort of folks who don't watch it on TV, but DVR or hulu or torrent or some such. I watch Community and 30 Rock weekly, but I've never watched a single episode of either "on tv" and it seems like I know plenty of folks who are the same.

Those ratings I just gave are the "Live +7" ratings, so they take into account DVR and On Demand viewing for the next 7 days after they air.  It's true that these shows gain as much as 50% during that time. But even if, like, their ratings DOUBLED through hulu and torrents, they would still be terrible.

guess the key to big numbers is to make really shitty tv.

i think in the good programming will soon be exclusively reserved for online services. i think how successful the new AD episodes are on netflix will be a good indicator of whether or not that's the future.

Man I hope the new AD episodes are okay. They don't have to even approach the brilliance of the originals, just be "OK." I re-watched a few episodes recently and the lulz-per-minute ratio remains higher than anything that's come since.
