Fresh Direct dudes, if you use 'em? Percentage of bill, five bucks total, five bucks each (sometimes they send two, or at least they used to--haven't ordered groceries in awhile), some other amount? The website says one is under no obligation to tip but may offer a "nominal" tip for "excellent service." I dunno, I'm already paying for the delivery and these guys certainly aren't using their own vehicles or paying for their own gas, so I am inclined to take the word "nominal" a little more seriously here than I would in other delivery contexts.
P.S. This is a fun game.

I got 9 minidonuts instead of 6 this morning from the food truck guy pretty much on the strength of a decent tip and some conversation so I say be nice to people and give them money why not

Those guys make 8 bucks an hour and Fresh Direct is a shitty fucking crooked company when it comes to its employees.

Chinese buffet. You walk in, they tell you to sit anywhere, bring you a glass of water and then ignore you until you leave. Go.

Dollar for the busser
I do that, but there's really no way of knowing if the busser gets it. Do you write a post it and put it on the dollar? Do you personally hand the dollar to the busser? I never really put much thought into it.

Yeah, and what's worse, 10% for dim sum. I have been strictly forbidden to tip more than 10% by my (Chinese) relatives. I always feel terrible.

So what's the situation in a hotel (regular, not fancy one, not using room service)? Who are you supposed to tip, if anyone, how much and in what situations?

As someone who worked in limited service hotels for many years, I'd say there's really very little expectation you're going to tip at all. Leaving a fiver for the cleaning staff is always nice, and the front desk clerks will definitely appreciate it, but no one's going to think less of you for not tipping, since it's just not part of the culture of those places.

Yeah, I'd tip housekeeping a few ones, whatever you have. $5 would be very nice.
