I actually ran (kind of) for 20 mins today. On a treadmill. It was OK. Not very fast, but enough to make me sweat and get my heartrate up a bit. Also I had the lungs to do it. I must be getting fitter, hey?
Also got my echocardiogram results back and it's all OK. The ectopic heartbeats are merely annoying, and the mitral valve leak is minor. All good.
I'm glad you're healthy!

Oh, good news and well done you! My understanding is that not very fast running is actually quite good for you. I think advanced runners mix in some sprints but on the whole, if you're just getting in a little cardio, great speed is not required.

Yeah this girl at my office always wants exercise advice and I always tell her your time commitment to calories burned is never going be better than running. She says she sucks at running. So! Walk/jog/walk/jog for 30 minutes!

I am told this is called "fartlicking"
I believe we have covered this previously but I am giggling again anyway

Nah, fartleks are grueling because it's like run/walk/SPRINT/RUN and the intervals are all fucked up and ideally you have no idea how long you'll have to run or sprint or what leg comes next.

The fartleks I did when training for my half marathon had no walking. Basically you jog to warm up, run your ass off, jog at an easy pace to recover, and then run your ass off again.
I created my own system when I had access to a treadmill. Jog 1 miles at 8mph. run 1.5 miles at 10.5 mph (brutal) jog 1 mile at 7 mph. that burns some serious calories and takes like no times.

My go-to intervally-thing on the treadmill is a quarter mile at 8mph, then a quarter mile at 8.6, then one at 8, then one at 9.1, and so on until I've run 4 miles, with the last quarter at 12.1. Often switching speeds that much breaks the treadmill, and I enjoy sticking it to my shitty gym

It's spring break here so I think I'm going to go to the university rec center today and check out the cardio equipment since all the scary hardbody musclehead people will be gone. In addition to the stationary bikes, would the elliptical be a good thing for me to try? I haven't run more than like 100 yards in literally years.

I personally find the elliptical awkward and annoying, partly due to my height, and partly due to the fact that I have to put in like twice the amount of time to get the same workout I would get running. But trying a bunch of things to see what you can see yourself actually doing on a regular basis is probably a good plan.

Yeah, you may as well just try out everything there and see what you dig. In terms of cardiovascular equipment besides running and biking, I kinda like rowing machines.
also do a leg press

my first semester at college when I went to my university gym I'd use the ellipticals all the time and called them Moonwalkers because that's what it feels like you're doing! I'd watch 1 felicity episode while moonwalking and then do some other stuff. It wasn't enough to offset all the white cheddar cheez-its though.

I bought some dat Now! Protein you linked to. Got the unflavored kind to mix into things. Mixing into vitamin water...not a good plan. I'm gonna try that milo flavor stuff which I've been putting in unflavored Greek yogurt. Totally delicious

See, I don't get this. When I use the elliptical I really feel like something's happening - my legs and arms get sore and I get really winded, in a way that it doesn't so much when I run on a treadmill. I never pay any attention to how many calories a machine tells me I've used. Only speed and time, and maybe distance...
On Friday I did the boxing class and then 25 mins on the elliptical and my legs still hurt (need to stretch better I guess).

I'm not quite sure what bluc and the millster mean, either. From looking at various sources, it seems like running at 8mph will burn maybe 20-30% more calories per hour than an elliptical trainer, more or less. Though I guess if you're an experienced runner maybe you're getting a better workout in other ways? Personally my knees are kind of gimp, so if I ran on concrete for 30 min I'd probably break down crying. Today when I got off the elliptical my legs and thighs felt rubbery and good.

It def depends on your goals your situation, etc. I want to burn a hella lot of calories, and from that perspective I find them wanting, which wouldn't bug me so much, if the damn LED readouts on them didn't promise you were burning a shit ton of calories.

Really though I'm still curious about the elliptical. I did 20 min today and the calorie burn readout was much, much lower than the online calculator I use would suggest.

If the machine doesn't ask you for your height, weight, and sex, the readout is completely useless. If it is drastically different, the calculator probably assumed a more intense rate. My girlfriend and I get the same machine readout for running 3 miles on a treadmill, but I weigh 80 more pounds than she does. She actually burns about less than it says and I actually burn quite a bit more.
I'm too tall for elliptical
