That's my reaction! I have often looked up to jeb as a man of virtue and experience!
And jeb is of course a man of virtue and experience and I s'pose this is just another one of those reminders that age doesn't have a lot to do with most things.

Jeb you're only 25???
I do like that the thrust of LPTJ has been a slow movement of people from the drinking thread to the fitness thread

I thought I was the only person who used "fugue state" in casual conversation.

Man the last couple days have been pretty brutal. Felt exhausted and starved all day Monday & Tuesday. Feeling pretty good after this morning's workout, though, hope today is a little better.

For $70 on amazon, the polar heart rate f7 monitor is MONEY. My resting heart beat is 47-49! That's excitin.

I got a heart rate monitor a while back, and it doesn't seem to register my heartbeat. I'd assume it was just a shitty one, except that the reviews are good and I have trouble with capacitive sensors sometimes, so I'm worried it's just a problem with my body.

Mine didn't eventuate - the REI store that the bloke went to didn't have them in stock and he didn't have time to get it mailed....Gonna have to get it sent here instead.... but $70 for the Polar F7 looks good :-) lmk how it works for you? It was one of the ones on my shortlist...

Random goal set this morning: I am going to train until I can run from my apartment to the beach. That's 2.5 miles. Then, to the beach and back.

Man this strength training business makes me feel like a total chode. It just all feels so unnatural and awkward, which, yeah, I know, it'll begin to feel more natural, but figuring out a training regimen on your own is a lot more intimidating than just going "okay I am going to ride ten miles now and that will be a good thing"

Everybody carries fat in their sides unless they are a body builder. Building muscle there only pushes your love handles out further. Do situps, etc, and include some oblique crunches where your legs are flopped to either side. But doing weighted oblique exercises makes zero sense for women.
I think you're vastly overestimating the amount of muscle any woman is going to be able to gain on her obliques, as well as what the actual aesthetic effect of that small amount of muscle under one's lovehandles is. Much like Bernard, I'm not saying that weighted obliques are some awesome exercise, but doing weighted oblique exercises are absolutely not going to have any kind of deleterious widening effect.

If I wanted to work in a bit of strength training, where would be a good place for me to start?
Stronglifts 5x5
is a very good, basic program, and basically a modification of Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength, which is a classic program involving a small number of exercises that each use a bunch of different muscles.
There are two workouts, alternated, with at least one rest day in between; so each week you could do Workout A on Monday, then Workout B on Wednesday. The exercises (with youtube links!) are:
Workout A:
Squats
- 5 sets of 5 repetitions each
Bench Press
- 5 sets of 5 repetitions each
Barbell Rows
- 5 sets of 5 repetitions each
Workout B:
Squats
- 5 sets of 5 repetitions each
Overhead Press
- 5 sets of 5 repetitions each
Deadlifts
- 1 set of 5 repetitions each
EDIT: Looking for other squat things, I came across
this article
, which has a good video demonstrating bodyweight squats.
I guess I could always start here, though!

Do you not have a room at your gym with a circuit of strength machines?
