What do you guys think about cheat meals/cheat days, anyway? Seems like the overwhelming consensus is that a few strategic calorie spikes throughout the week are good for the metabolism, but I have a hard time following through and actually indulging. Typically I end up eating modestly and drinking some, but I end up with the same net calorie totals I would on a normal day, pretty much. The idea of getting some pizza or chicken wings and not stressing over it is a pretty appealing one.
I think the consensus is, only cheat once you've reached your goal. I definitely don't think cheating once a week is a good idea, unless you know, you like the way you look without your clothes on. When I want to go out and eat some nasty ass shit, I think about my ass, and my back fat. That seems to help. Once I reach my goal, then I'll fucking be eating chocolate covered strawberry's off a stripper's ass and shooting up chicken mcnugget puree in the back of a papa john's...and drinking liters of garlic dipping sauce.
Cheating after you complete a goal is nice, though. Like, you know, set a goal, and then when you reach it... bam!... do your worst! But I hear a cheat day can set you back 3 days of working hard, because it's not all calories..it's also how your body processes it which depend on the type of calories. I find it to be kinda true, because if I eat like shit, no matter how I work out..I can't seem to overcome that.
I cheated this weekend, but only because I had some rationale in my mind that made it OK and I am still pretending that rationale is a good rationale. I mean, I didn't eat mcdonalds or anything but I had some serious candy last night. It got pretty hairy. And then I ate mexican food today, including a buncha shit. All excused away of course, in my head, because I've given up eating meat, and I was trying to get a last hoorah in. I got that hoorah in.

I don't have a regular cheat day, but if I do eat outside my allowance I try to keep some kind of tabs on it, in terms of balancing it against the exercise I've done and not totally overindulge. (f'rinstance last week I earned 35 random units with exercise which is more than one day's total allowance, so when I went to a friend's house yesterday, I ate whatever the fuck I wanted, but not more than I wanted :-)
I'm really pleased with how my run went this morning - I went further *and* faster than I ever have. I'd been running around 6:30/km over 5 k but I did 5:50 over 5.9 today! I can't quite believe it.

I've been parking my car at the farther lot just to get the extra bit of walk! Good thing my campus is huge.

I had to go to work earlier than usual today, so I went to the gym a little earlier than usual, and I went for the squat rack at the same time that another somewhat nerdy-looking guy was going for it. I asked if he minded if I worked in as he exercised, and he said sure, so we took turns doing sets of squats.
He was like, "Are you doing Starting Strength?" and I said, "Kinda! It's Stronglifts, it's a variant on the basic Starting Strength exercises!" He said, "Oh, cool! I'm usually the only one here who uses the squat rack!" and I said, "Me too!"

I took a couple days off, but I'll get back at it tomorrow. I've been having garage sales the last 2 days, and I actually had Mcdonalds this morning, a sausage mcmuffin, for the first time in about a year and that mcdonalds will really do it for a guy. That shit made me feel GREEEAATTT or maybe it was the constant beers.

Moving from a bent to standing postion in the power cage this morning, I accidentally cracked the back of my head against the bar. It was a loud, sharp noise. I was very impressed with myself!

I've been having some achilles and knee pain over the last week. I've been hitting it pretty hard, so I'm sure that's part of it, but I really think that the elliptical and I are simply not meant to be. Yesterday I only biked, and I'm already starting to feel better. I think the combination of being really tall and having feet that like to point outward means that it's not going to be possible for me to use the elliptical comfortably. I might have to look into rowing some more (on Jess's recommendation) just as a way to vary my workout some, since the bike gets pretty boring too.
But yeah, anyway, I've lost just over twenty pounds since I've started making an effort to get in shape. It feels awesome! And I feel so much healthier and better already! Now I have 15 pounds to go until I'm at my first goal, at which point I'll kind of reasses and figure out where I want to be and how much more weight I'd like to try to lose.

Hell yeah man, that's awesome! I hit 40lbs this week, myself, and that's all been since like the second week of January. I too feel pretty great! And I may follow your lead on the rowing machine; that thing looks kind of fun, actually. Though cardio doesn't bore me like it does a lot of folks; I can get on auto pilot and listen to podcasts, read, etc.
Anyway it looks like I won't see much more downward progress the rest of May. The next three weeks is just nonstop parties, dinners, cookouts, traveling, etc. Really trying to make my ultimate goal a round (lol) fifty pounds, but I'm definitely okay with doing that last ten more gradually over the rest of the summer. I think expecting less in terms of weekly results and getting into the mindset of incremental, gradual change will benefit my eventual transition to straight maintenance, too. Eventually I just hope to be a decently healthy overweight dude who goes to the gym 3-5 times/week.
