I got some of this Thatcher's cucumber liqueur, and it mixes in with Hendricks fantastically.

I'd suggest
this
as a vehicle for cucumber and gin.

I like that this thread devolved into a discussion of gin.

I just did the nerd fitness workout Bernard was talking about a long time ago! I love it! I only did 2 circuits but I can totally see myself keeping this up. I ate lunch at golden corral today so I needed a self esteem boost. Wee!

Jon what's up with your MFP stuff lately? 1 calorie burned?
I put my calories burned in my exercise notes. I don't like how MFP re-adds burned calories back into your totals for the day. I'm usually burning 14-1500 calories due to exercise, according to my heart rate monitor. So what was happening is I was eating back 14-1500 calories, and oh, a few more, besides.
These these were "hard training" calories, some coming from jogging, some coming from muscular endurance training or strength training and I will sometimes fall into the habit of thinking that I deserve a unspeakable food item, like Doritos.
4-5 servings of Doritos is probably 800 calories, and it's really empty fat and carbohydrates that really aren't doing a good job of replacing the energy I burned, so I'd then eat a bit more of something else, to make up for the unspeakable bleakness of the Doritos. Over the last month I gained about 8-10 lbs although, it's debatable because of body composition type issues. I have "hulked" out a little bit lately, so some of that trash I was putting in my body may have found its way to turning into lean body muscle because of all the cardio and endurance type training. I'm not sure that hulking out is what I'm wanting. The biggest thing I keep learning over and over again is "bodies are fucking weird".
But, yeah, so my lifelong bad relationship with food combined with the feeling that I am "owed" calories, causes a guy to make some bad calls as far as that shit goes, and I decided to get a grip on it, and make some changes to how I record things so the element of "I deserve to eat shit that is what is killing people who don't exercise and it's not good for me either to consume a week's salt intake in a night or to eat a bunch of sugar that is causing haywire on my dopamine receptors" reduces a little into something more manageable, like maybe if I'm really active on a weekend, I can enjoy some food and celebrations, or play sand volleyball on Wednesdays and drink Bud Light for $2.50 per tallboy. But, y'know, as I travel closer toward a whole food diet, the idea that I might eat 90% clean, is getting really attractive to me. I've settled on a lunch of brown rice every day and organic chicken with chilli sauce and such, and that's becoming a new staple that I don't mind eating every single lunch. So yeah.
Is this more information than you wanted/and or needed? Probably.
Hey, this is my anniversary! Exactly one year ago, I went on a walk with a pretty gal, and realized how fat I had gotten, and how out of shape I was, and decided that if that pretty gal was ever gonna like me back, I was gonna have to make some changes. The pretty gal is long gone, but I've stuck with my real love these days which is hitting the pavement for a run and being one with my self and all that shit!

Also, I do appreciate the detailed response. Makes a lot of sense to me.

What you're describing is pretty common. People who exercise tend the gain weight because we over estimate the effect of the workout vs food consumption. Losing weight is so much more about diet than exercise.

This runs counter to my experience and everything I've read on the topic. It's much more effective to burn fat than starve it.

I understand where milly is coming from, but for me part of the appeal of a good long workout is that I can then indulge a little with things I really enjoy (ie, beer and liquor). If I spend 90 minutes doing cardio in the morning, I reap the rewards in a larger dinner than I might otherwise have, or a couple craft beers or cocktails. milly and I have substantially different ultimate goals, though, I think, as well as different relationships to food.

Yeah, it really depends what your goals are. Obviously both diet and exercise are important to health in general, but if your goal is to get to or maintain a healthy weight, and have healthy bones, joints, muscles, etc, then mostly you'll be concerned with exercise, and moderate dietary indulgences here and there aren't going to set you back too much. If your goal is to have as little body fat as possible and get dat ideal beach body or whatever, then yeah, you're going to have to be very meticulous with your diet, especially as you age.

Everyone's shit is different, etc., but I dropped from 165 to 155 a few months ago just by cutting out all non-fruit and non-carb sugar, cutting way back on beer and eliminating cheese. Here I go using literally as an intensifier but that's literally all I did. Still need to exercise more though and it doesn't solve the ongoing problem that I'm a slender person with a fat face, which is a good look for no one.

I disagree with you gentleman sir. Healthy weight, bones, joints, muscles, is mostly tied to diet. Fat and ill-health is a byproduct of a bad diet, and by eating mostly whole foods, fat will disappear! You could skip exercise. Who gets fat eating apples and broccoli and so on? But if you eat like shit, the fat and disease will come. You can exercise and still get Diabetes type 2 or have a heart attack or having continuing poor health. Trying to exercise a poor diet off is like trying to exercise a pack a day smoking habit off or worse -- because diet is basically everything.
Exercise is great for the heart, and muscles, and so on, and it makes you look and feel better, and it is senseless that people are awake 24 hours per day and don't spend a single minute of that time, performing proper maintenance on their body -- of some sort. But you could just eat a really healthy balanced diet and do very little exercise except for a short walk, and you'd probably be fine and live until you were 90 and look great.
I do know what you are saying, and heartily agree on the merits of indulgence! I indulged the shit outta some chips last night. I just disagree that a poor diet combined with exercise creates a healthy body. You simply cannot eat Wendy's and then exercise that off. Fried potatoes are not ever going to work for your dietary benefit!

Oh yeah, I mean back in January I dropped ten pounds in two weeks simply by not drinking--at all. That's all I did. But I was *really* fat. I probably would have continued to see results for a little while simply by reining in the calories radically, but almost certainly would have fallen off after a while because I doubt I could go for months and months without enjoying the things that I love--like beer! From what I've read a big part of the reasons that people fail at losing and keeping weight off in the long term is that they focus on diet to the exclusion of exercise, thinking they won't have to work hard, just deny themselves. But that's not healthy or, for most people, sustainable.

Once a week? I don't really jones for junk food, but find myself eating crap at least once or twice a week out of convenience or lack of other options.

Oh, yeah, like I SAID, overall diet is definitely important for a healthy lifestyle. It's just that, for most people, it's more important to make healthy choices overall than worry about every single thing that's going into your body.
Obviously, if you're watching your diet carefully, you're going to have better results, more quickly, but for a lot of people that's not really important, and a lot of people are going to have trouble maintaining that anyhow. I'm of the view that diet should be more about moving in the right direction than about being perfect.
