Oh, yeah, like I SAID, overall diet is definitely important for a healthy lifestyle. It's just that, for most people, it's more important to make healthy choices overall than worry about every single thing that's going into your body.
Obviously, if you're watching your diet carefully, you're going to have better results, more quickly, but for a lot of people that's not really important, and a lot of people are going to have trouble maintaining that anyhow. I'm of the view that diet should be more about moving in the right direction than about being perfect.
You actually said ...
your goal is to get to or maintain a healthy weight, and have healthy bones, joints, muscles, etc,
then mostly you'll be concerned with exercise
I don't think exercise plays that big of a part. Nor am I saying diet should be perfect, but it is possible to shoot for and attain 80-85% healthy diet without a whole lotta bother, and if you hit that you'll probably die in your bed of natural causes with a pretty nice bod for such an old guy/gal. And, you could probably do that without one lick of the goddamn treadmill!
Your mileage will vary. Food corporations are murdering us, and we all know this. I'm not trying to "get up all in here" but I know from experience that until I ate cleaner, I never knew what feeling good was. I think a lot of people, once they see how it feels, would be like, Hey General Mills Fuck You I Aint Gonna Do What You Told Me!

Dude, you just left off the first part of that sentence, tryna quote me to make me look bad. Who the fuck are you, Babar?

Obviously both diet and exercise are important to health
We're arguing when really we have basically the same opinion.

My point is that say you're taking in 2500 cals a day. If you start working out every day, you're likely to burn 300-500 calories. If you maintain your current diet, great! If you start saying to yourself that it doesn't matter cause you work out every day, well, you might be giving yourself a false sense of security in your diet. A lot of people do that, and a lot of people overestimate the value of their workout vs calorie intake.

Basically I work out to offset my heavy drinking. I probably put down 1200 calories or more per day of just booze.

Yeah, but burning/accumulating body fat is not just about caloric intake, especially as you age. & also "physical fitness" and "body fat reduction" are
different, overlapping goals that are too often conflated.
(I also don't mean to sound like I'm down on fitness for vanity's sake. We're all vain creatures; I definitely know what motivates me 45 minutes into a workout).
And, I'll say this, NOT as someone who's judging you at all, but as someone who's just 4 years further down the same road; work on managing the drinking now, because you're about at the point where it's going to get harder for your body to take. Sad to say, but you've gotta move towards the 9:00 PM "wee dram and out" model

I'm pretty much there already. I only tie one on once or twice a week.
This morning was the first at my new gym, the
Astoria Sports Complex
. I am not a dude of gyms so I can't really judge whether or not their weight room is great or whatever, but they've got a nice fleet of cardio machines and a yearly membership there literally costs 1/10 as much as at the New York Sports Club down the street ($160! for a year!). Plus the members are a representative sample of Astoria characters; this morning I was on the stationary next to a couple of abuelitas, a Pakistani dude having a loud conversation by Bluetooth headset, and another 20-something professional white boy with a beard. One of the Yelp reviews of the place mentioned how there are a few regulars who exercise in saris.

That sounds awesome, and that price is incredible! You can't find anything even close to that cheap here, at least that I'm aware of. (Okay--yes, you can, but it's Planet Fitness.) I'm paying $35/mo for the Y, and that's only because we're on the two adult househould plan--otherwise it'd be more like 50 or 60, since I don't qualify for financial aid/hardship scholarships/whatever.
If they have a circuit of weight machines, I recommend checking that out. I don't mess with the free weights (at least for now) but having that circuit to complete really helps me a lot.

By the way: I'm feeling the best I've ever felt. I think making the decision to cut out dairy was a really good one (though I ate some cheese and sour cream chips today, so I don't think I've quite got the hang out of it yet), and just in general I'm feeling considerably more healthy and fit than I have in a long time--possibly ever. Been hitting the gym regularly, consistently losing weight, and putting tons of miles on the bike. I rode almost 50 miles over Saturday and Sunday! I'm pretty excited about that.

Mess with free weights! Mess with free weights!
I've really been enjoying deadlifting lately, as it's such a simple and direct exercise: pick up this big thing. Okay, put it down. There you go.

Picking up people when they're relaxed is way harder. You want them to tense up first, so they don't flop around unhelpfully. When wrestling you do things like pummel, push or yank someone to get them to tense up. For sleeping people, something else might be appropriate. Pinching them really hard in a sensitive spot?
