I thought there was a fairly light touch to his characterization, considering he was mostly just allowed to speak for himself and say big, crazy expansive things. And every other driver they have on camera is saying grandiloquent, ridiculous shit too. It seemed authentic to the culture of racing in the way the movie constructed it, anyway.

Also: film people I could really use your help. Looking for movies, any movies, preferably post-9/11, regardless of quality, that have to do with spies. Particularly looking for ones about moles or penetration agents, not double agents; spies whose allegiances are only flowing in one direction.

The actual racing bit is (made to look) awesome! It's far faster than NASCAR (I think) and some of the urban tracks are just nuts. But the point system and the politics of it are just a complete farce. Every world championship race Senna wins he wins because someone else crashes, or there's a technical disqualification, or the guy who was slightly ahead of him point-wise couldn't finish the race. It's like the entire season leads up to this one race and then it's usually decided on a technicality within the first ten seconds.
The NASCAR points system was somewhat farcical, too, until they streamlined it a few years ago. Points systems are kind of a necessary evil, but I don't know anything about the F1 system. NASCAR definitely shares the fucked-up politics problem, though, which I guess is endemic of professional racing in general.
I haven't seen Senna, but another F1 movie with fantastic race cinematography is John Frankenheimer's Grand Prix. The actual plot is boring, but it's interspersed with amazing, ingeniously-shot 15-minute race sequences that still look spectacular today (movie's from the 60s). The Monaco Grand Prix sequence that opens the film is worth watching the movie for.
/also brought up with NASCAR

I like Formula 1, as a casual observer. A good way to waste a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon.
edit: OT: there was a fanatstic (if rather sensationally titled) documentary on its early years on BBC iplayer last year, called 'Grand Prix - The Killer Years'. I can't find it available to watch anywhere online, but its riveting viewing if anyone does manage to track it down.

Burn After Reading
is the only one that comes to mind for me, but I have a feeling that isn't really what you're going for.

Not post-9/11, but _Three Days of the Condor_ is great. _Spy Game_ is fun if not particularly good. Both _Syriana_ and _The Constant Gardener_ are arguably post-national spy movies.

Did you guys mention Spies Like Us, or The Gate? The Gate's not technically a spy movie, because it's kids who open a gate to the Old Ones, but I personally consider Old Ones to be spies.

I do believe it was both. 3D moves between eras depending on whether or not 3D was added post production or it was shot with 3D cameras.

I just saw searching for spy movies on netflix instant that there is a spy movie called Norwegian Ninja. I think you ought to check it out man. In fact, I think we all ought to check it out and then discuss it afterwards.

The Rock fluttering his hands was pretty funny, but overall I do not get you guyses thing about
Southland Tales
AT ALL. It's soooo ponderous and the 20 minutes of exposition it opens with which doesn't let you know what is happening at all, and then there'll be plot for like one scene and then its back to flickering images that make no sense and people saying ridiculous things that also make no sense. All these things should add up to something that is amazing and strange but after an hour and a half when I realised I could just walk out for five minutes and leave it playing and not miss a single thing that would relate to what I was seeing when I came back i started wondering why I was bothering.
What I'm saying is, I think I need the influence of a lot more substances, and then I should try again.
