plus I don't think I've ever heard kibbutz used to illustrate a bad thing or something we wouldn't want for ourselves. They always seemed pretty nice to me.

"What America is not a collective where we all work in a kibbutz or we all in some little entity, instead it's individuals pursuing their dreams and building successful enterprises which employ others and they become inspired as they see what has happened in the place they work and go off and start their own enterprises."

this does not make sense at all. Did they transcribe it wrong or is he a weird talker? Also "collective where we all work" doesn't sound unappealing to me. And this "individuals building successful enterprises which employ others and they become inspired as they see what has happened in the place they work and go off and start their own enterprises." sounds really confusing and not actually workable because if everyone had their own enterprises... I don't know, I'll shut up.

IS THAT BAD?

Yeah, I mean the New American Model of "We're all in this for ourselves and that's what makes us great" is so obviously false on its face that it blows my mind that anyone accepts it as truth.

Yeah, I think Mitt Romney basically just said that America is a pyramid scheme.

Well, basically.

addendum: what I find most fascinating (but by no means surprising) about that little spiel of his is how it runs exactly counter to the ethos of Mormon Church in its first seven decades (more or less until the end of polygamy). I have read about twelve or so books on the history of the Mormon Church in this past year,* and among the best is Mark P Leone's Roots of Modern Mormonism (1979), which states in its opening page:

Quote
...this fast-growing and national known church started as a utopian experiment in direct opposition to the United States. During much of the nineteenth century its goals were common ownership of property and classlessness, both of which were based on an outspoken criticism of industrial capitalism as it then existed in Europe and the United States.

And even in its current, aggressively capitalist form, the Mormon Church maintains an extensive welfare system for its members. One would think this would give even a total dunderhead like Romney pause, even just for a second. One would think.

*if anyone wants some recommendations, I got 'em!

Unless he views support of the general welfare to be a religious function and not a state function, I guess.

Of course, yeah, sure--though the idea that the two are separable also runs counter to the first half of Mormon history--but anyhow he is the one who felt compelled to mention a kibbutz. Why get all, like, exotic about it, when there is a perfectly good example here in America? "What America is not is a collective where we all work in a kibbutz or we are all in Utah, instead it's a pyramid scheme."

I have read about twelve or so books on the history of the Mormon Church in this past year

only one i've read is krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven, which was pretty good.

keep meaning to read Harold Bloom's American Religion, which is on Mormonism and (i think) Jehovah's Witnesses. did you read it? i'm guessing it's where Bloom applies his bizarre kabbalah to the equally bizarre Mormon cosmology. which could be good, or could be unreadable.

You are pretty much dead-on. I found it on the unreadable side. The best book on the roots of Mormon cosmology that I have read is John L. Brooke’s Refiner’s Fire: The Making of Mormon Cosmology. He delves at length in its connection to the occult (alchemy, witchcraft, you know), counterfeiting, and Freemasonry.

I don't comment on the 30 second political ads, I don't see why I'd pay attention to the three-hour ones.

The suspense as to whether Rice will be the first/only to shout out Bush by name is killing me.

Edit: Nope, she went with the passengers of United 93 instead lol

My favorite:

Quote
As Romney has come forth as the Republican candidate for President of the United States, Barack Obama has settled in on his own election strategy.  Since he cannot run on his economic record, he has venomously attacked Romney from every angle.  First he appealed to pet lovers when the news was released that Romney once traveled with the family dog and his kennel strapped to the top of the car.  This didn’t hold well when the public was reminded the Obama ate dog as a child. . . .
