Theater as in a movie or as in a play? Either way, the answer is theater, because I fucking hate going to see live shows 99.something% of the time.

It's a stupid caveat but this is going to vary based on specifics. But I go see way more live music than theatre.

If this was asked five years ago when I was living in Phoenix I would've answered concert/live shows without much consideration. But now, a little older and living within walking distance of Broadway and the Met Opera House I have to answer theater.

In a few months my first full year in NYC will be done and in that year I bet I will have seen as many concerts as theater productions.

Also for my answering I am ignoring movies (I have also seen almost none in the theater anyway) and counting rock shows and classical concerts as "concert/live show" and Broadway-style shows, operas and talky-plays as "theater."

If musicals and operas belong to a third category I vote for that one, enthusiastically.

I rarely see theatre, but then I rarely go to gigs. I may pick theatre based on the fact that the waiting around for bands period at gigs is one of my most hated activities ever. But a decent gig is so special. Undecided.

I've also recently made peace with the fact that I, like evidently a few of you, just really dislike the live-show-in-a-bar experience. It's like the opposite of what I go to a bar for.

If I'm going to a bar to hang out with friends I'd prefer any music to be quiet. But if I'm going to a concert I'd rather it be somewhere that sells alcohol and be unseated, except for classical music and a few other more mellow shows.

That is I love the band-in-a-bar thing, but I can't hack it as well anymore.

Hell, the only time I like to see live shows anymore is when it's at a place with seating, and even then, most of the time, the fun gets sucked out of it pretty quick.  Nothing as fun as standing in line outside for an hour, to have the doors open half an hour after they were supposed to, so you can be corralled inside to wait 45-75 minutes for the opening band goes on, and who proceed to pretend that they're the band everybody came to see and play for way too long, so you can wait another hour or two before the actual band you came to see goes on, so you can finally get out of the show at 1AM when the subways are no longer running, on a weeknight, when you have to be at work at 7 the next morning (because no bands apparently play shows on Friday or Saturday nights).

I like live shows, but my work (or more precisely, my commute) is sucking my will to live. I had a ticket to see EMA last night, an dI had been looking forward to it, but when I got home it just did not hold the appeal of staying home and rewatching Farscape episodes again.

I used to see a fair whack of theatre, but I haven't done that on any sort of basis in many years now.

If I lived in a place with better live theatre I'd consider that, but as it is, live shows in this town are far and away superior.
