PS it wasn't dalston lane, but I survived Perfect Chicken! (my friend got sick though)
As Alex found, we probably went to one of the worst branches:
http://www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk/business/perfect-fried-chicken-london-438281.html
I got sick on Friday, but that was three days afters having two bites of that odious chicken, and possibly due to exhaustion-eating a lot of fat/spicy food and cookies for five days in a row, so maybe it isn't its fault...
edit: Haha, this PFC Facebook profile is hilarious

A new logo could bring some freshness to PFC chicken. I nominate:

I've done some more research on the phenomenon of Perfect Fried Chicken in the meantime and have concluded that it just isn't a chain. So as amusing as the idea that the PFC we went to in Dalston would declare that they will never compromise is, that Facebook page you found for a chicken joint in Reading isn't actually related to the one we went to at all. In fact, it's entirely possible that they actually serve somewhat edible food there!
I sort of already had a hunch that it can't be a chain in London, since the PFCs don’t have a consistent logo at all (though most of them do feature the same/similar image of a chicken head somewhere), but I have since been able to substantiate this theory with the help of further research.
From a
research report conducted at London Metropolitan University on fast food in the Tower Hamlets
:
Quote
Basic Fried Chicken Outlets
These tend to have ‘Chicken’ in their name with many using the brand name ‘Perfect
Fried Chicken’. Perfect Fried Chicken is not a franchise, but rather signifies the
particular type of spicy fried chicken these outlets make which caters to the tastes of the
local Asian community.
From a
write-up of a book on the aesthetics of these fried chicken places
:
Quote
Called such names as Perfect Fried Chicken and Tennessee Fried Chicken, these are not franchises, but individual establishments that happen to use the same names and looks, though no two are the same. It is these differences that comprise Chicken: Low Art, High Calorie, showcasing a vivid vernacular design culture.
That book apparently also features
an interview with the guy who designed about 90% of the logos of these London fried chicken joints
, such as these:
So yeah, that's that. Perhaps we will have to do comparative research among the different PFCs of London after all!

There's a similar phenomenon with fried chicken joints, too. There are dozens of Kennedy Fried Chicken & Crown Fried Chicken restaurants in NYC, most of them not connected by anything other than the name.

On the chicken front: have any of you guys visited a Maryland Fried Chicken? Like the places mentioned upthread, they don't seem to have a centralized web presence and they're more of a loose confederation of restaurants than a vertically-integrated franchise, but they're all over coastal South Carolina and dip south as far as Florida. Interiors are real dingy, with a yellow and brown color scheme, feels like a 70s timewarp, but the food's actually OK.
