My new neighborhood has this great Greek deli. They make a smoked hummus that tastes kinda like someone grilled ranch dressing. It's all wrong but so good.

A BRIEF POLL:
What are your favorite salad fixins? It has been so hot here for the past two weeks that all I have been able to consume at home in my airconditionerless apartment is salad, and cottage cheese with peapods and siracha.

I eat a boring spinach/arugula/field mix/whatever kind of thing with grape tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, avocado, and sesame shiitake dressing (will add cut up baked tofu if I have it)
also good: mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, bleu cheese w/ balsamic over greens
Bill eats spinach/arugula with quinoa or couscous, daiya noncheese, slivered almonds, possibly other nuts, dried fruits. He only eats non-vinegar dressings - either the garlic or lemon Annie's, or one he makes with tahini and lemon juice.

Chicken sauteed in lemon juice, olive oil, and hot sauce, with a bit of salt, pepper, and oregano until all the fluids cook off. It stores in the fridge nicely, and then you can put it on lettuce with blue cheese dressing, and it's like eating the salad version of buffalo wings.

walnuts, strawberries, hearts of palm, balsamic vinaigrette
radicchio, pears, candied pecans, buttermilk dressing (homemade -- I imagine it would taste awful with commercial ranch dressing)
mango, jicama, grapefruit, almonds, chile-lime dressing
all the above added to whatever kinda greens, be they romaine hearts, bag o salad, iceberg, frisee + mache, whateva
or when I have 5 minutes: kitchen sink + bottled miso dressing

You guys eat fancy salads. Last night I made a grand old stand-by for serving along the heavy savoury food we South Africans favour:
two measures grated carrot, one measure thinly sliced red onion, dash of balsamic vinegar, pinch of salt, pinch of sugar, (raisins optional).
That went down a treat with the bean curry and rice I had.
I've been hankering to make a curried egg salad for a while, but I don't know the recipe. I'll post it here once I've got it.

Tonight's salad:
Lettuce, cherry tomatoes, blue cheese, avocado, sprouts, tofu & walnuts, with a lemon/oil/balsamic dressing.

I should be keeping a list of these salads, so as to never have to turn on a stove in the summer. That GI salad and that Bernard salad both just kinda blew my mind.

Someone needs to put together an LPTJ Salad Cookery Book.

I've posted it here before the best simple summer salad recipe I've found is sweet corn cut off the cob, diced colourful bell peppers and chopped Italian parsley, blended together with a little sea salt. Naked.
The word cockluck is making me wonder if teetotallitarianism is such a great idea.

I'm making ice cream for a contest tomorrow! Salted malted chocolate base, with flecks of shortbread, toffee, and oreo-style vanilla creme.
The recipe -- for two gallons -- called for 32 egg yolks. I upped it to 36. So now I have 36 egg whites frozen in my fridge, ready to turned into one HELL of a quiche.

Yes, meringue and more meringue. Make a fucking pavlova, it's summer for fuck's sake! They are the best thing ever.

Are there any savory meringues out there? I'd be much more inclined to make a meringue if they weren't so sweet.
Although the whole project may be doomed, as there's a bit of yolk in the whites -- would it still whip up?

i made some chicken tikka masala last night and it was awesome. i've got a boston butt roast in the crock pot and homemade bbq sauce simmering away. i'm really starting to wonder how i survived so many years as a vegetarian/vegan.
i'm also really into making fruity iced teas. this week it was blackberry ginger lime mint green tea. these are even better when you add whiskey to them!

Liking that post hm.
On the other hand, today has been a 100% vegetarian day for me. Hash browns & eggs for breakfast, hummus, pita, veggies, olives & feta for dinner.
Today am bizarro day I guess. But seriously welcome to the meatatarian world, I'll be back after a bit
