hey Bernard!

if you get something with an sd card, i'd recommend getting a card with a high speed class (6+), it'll make transferring music on and off much quicker.

I find iTunes to be a pain in the rear to use. It feels to me like I have to constantly update it, and since my music is scattered across several machines, I have the added inconvenience of having to have iTunes everywhere, and all the libraries are different, and it's just such a hassle it annoys me to even talk about it.

See, this is what I was asking. My iPod is unsynched to anything and I do not use iTunes to manage it (I use Winamp). If your problem is iTunes, you can stop using iTunes without stopping using your iPod.

I know, other people have found ways of using their iPods, that do or do not involve iTunes, and the ones I've tried didn't work for me, and I do not want to try every one of them in order to confirm that they, too, do not work for me. Thus, "non-ipod" in the thread title. It's like Steven King novels. People really want you to read them all before you can declare you just don't like his writing!

Bernard, have you considered simply getting a Spotify subscription? If the hassle of library management is what turns you off, you might want to get a smaller client with Spotify support that can just stream whatever it is you like.

It's a music streaming service that has like 85% of all music ever on it. You can sample it for free (with some very infrequent ads) on your computer if you like. The version that works with mobile devices is $9.99/month.

Spotify has an increasingly awesome classical selection, bolstered in part by their robust DG and Naxos offerings.

You're welcome! If you sign up for that Spotify, this blog is awesome: http://www.spotifyclassical.com/ for keeping you up to date on classical offerings, and he also programs the official Spotify classical app (called Ulysses)

Thanks for this link! My impression initially was that classical fans were unhappy with Spotify's selection, but it's good to know that's changed (or I misunderstood)

I'm sure there could be rights differences in various countries but I can vouch for the U.S. selection
