Meanwhile, I watched Italy-Ireland and that was pretty dire. Italy changed their tactical shape and a number of players and just looked completely clueless and out of sorts for about half an hour before they eventually managed to create some danger and prevail over a still harmless Irish team. Definitely not a good performance, though, and I dread to think of what would happen to them if Pirlo were out for some reason, as he was involved in all of their four goals so far (3 assists, 1 goal).

Pirlo is just a solid hunk of class, though, isn't he?

Most definitely. Last night was his weakest performance so far (as was the case for most players on the pitch), but he still managed two assists, so, not bad.

Just an abysmal performance from France tonight. Extremely bad in every way (except for the goalkeeper), and the mentality and lack of character on display was shocking.

Their first defeat in 24 games though. I suspect a quarter final against Spain will raise a few performances?

It seems that while the Irish team did much as expected, even disappointed a little, the fans made a huge impression. This is the yesterday's  front page of the main paper in Poznan:

Seething with jealousy!

Top of the group, unbeaten, 5 different goalscorers, ended the Swedish hoodoo, clean sheet against hosts desperate for a result, matched the 3rd favourites for the tournament, good team spirit and discipline, avoided Spain.....

Italy-England could be a very open and interesting game, I think. I'm kind of dreading Spain-France, on the other hand, as that's bound to feature a lot of pointless midfield passing (also, I would normally root for Spain's opponent, but France squandered any amount of goodwill they had going for them last night).

Benzema will show up against Spain. I expect it to be 1-1 or France winning 1-0. Spain look very suspect in the back and should really count themselves fortunate to have made it past Croatia.

Good! Took the summer off of school to try and turn stuff around after a tough year and a half. Working a lot now, but vacationing soon. I'll try to make it by more.

As much as it pained me to see Angela Merkel so happy, that was a beautiful, heartwarming win.

No, I'm only joking - sorry! It was an utter trouncing of course.

what, exactly, would i be jealous of? i hold no interest in actually supporting any international team (apart from any who plays england, of course), i certainly couldn't give a shit about scotland when they play.

but really, the english hype machine is cooking up nicely now, after being rightfully restrained so far. i've seen some suggest that england are actually favourites against italy Laughing i'm predicting a comfortable 2-0 victory for the azzurri.

though, england going through to then get their traditional trouncing off the germans would be nice to see.

btw i have an italian grandfather and could legitimately play for italy if i was you know, good at football, so even more reason to cheer.
