I was feeling really exhausted all week, so I ended up skipping the gym most nights ... and I still lost two more pounds! Just need to make sure I don't interpret that as meaning I can continually get away with not going to the gym.

I stopped exercising completely (aside from walking to and from work) for four months, didn't gain any, though I definitely lost whatever muscle definition I had in my legs. I felt awful, but I think for much real noticeable physical change either way its going to take me at least a couple months. The change in the way I feel is almost instantaneous, though.

I've been fasting a couple times this week. I stop eating when I go to bed, then skip breakfast and lunch, work out in a fasted state, and then eat a giant salad and a bunch of other stuff in the evening, and then before I go to bed, I have another big meal. I've been lifting, doing a bit of a jog, and then the next day doing some cardio and a bit of a jog. It's been really hot here, like everywhere in the US, so I try to stick to jogging a couple miles outside only, instead of some extended thing.
Fasting is nice, because when you do eat, it's a studied, almost monastic practice. Like I'm willing to go above and beyond with the cookery, and I do it in a focused manner. Here is a photo of my salmon tikki in homemade cucumber and anaheim pepper yogurt with a vast salad of spinach and other greens. Then I demolished a huge bowl of spinach salad. Then I enjoyed half of a carton of ice cream. Then I ate some other shit.
Here is a photo of where I found my garbage can after they dumped it today, and I thought it was too funny to complain. I know it doesn't go here, but I'm putting it here.

the bastards drove right past my garbage can the other day. probably because there was just enough crap in it to make the lid not close completely.
they have some hippie system here where the trash can is half the size of the recycling and green waste, so now it's overflowing all over the place. i'm gonna have to go do a midnight dump behind the grocery store or something.

Shit, I need to work out more. I just happened across some pictures of me in 2007 and I looked
so much better
. Part of it is just the inevitably of no longer having a youth's frame, but if I go from acceptable-shape to great-shape I can get at least part of the way there.

Apparently, not enough people wanted to sign up for the full bouncy-shoe class at the Y, so they're doing a sample thing where you can pay 15 bucks to attend one class, rather than doing the whole session. I'm thinking about trying it!

You totally should, I want to know how it is!
I went for a run on Saturday, the first for 2 weeks, and felt like spewing the whole time. I think it's just from being less fit than I used to be - it wasn't food related (I hadn't eaten for hours), but it may've been not enough water before I went out. I dunno. I need to figure out how to get out more often before I totally lose heart...I miss that feeling of 'hey I could do this for ever'

So I guess I started running. It's one of those programs where they ease you into it. I've never been much into running, but once I actually started doing it I found that it was pretty cool. Equipment is minimal and you can pretty much do it anywhere. I feel a bit like I'm lumbering along, but my stride has become smoother the more I do it. It took me a bit to get over the bad rep jogging gets. I keep thinking of this:

Whole Foods

Another cool thing about our new apartment is that it is next to two of the best running tracks in the city: Albert Park lake and St Kilda beach.

Nope--but it does indeed look like they do Albert Park. Maybe one of these weeks. We're doing approximately 3k runs now, but it gets longer as we move on.

What's the program? Is it something you found online, or is it a group of IRL people?

Not sure--my wife keeps track of our time via an iPhone app. It's one of those where you walk for 5 minutes, then run for 3, then walk, then run for 5, and repeat.

Running is free. That, and the minimal time investment, is the single best thing about it.

I would love to run! My legs are too goofy for it, though.

Clare, yes--I think that's it.
Jeb, I also thought my legs were too goofy for it, but after a while (a week or two) even goofy legs end up working fairly well for running. I still feel a bit like I'm rumbling, Frankenstein-style down the road. But it's getting better!

i did my first prep-for-5k "run" yesterday -- more of a stagger -- and 24 hrs later still feel I just want to roll over and die. I HATE RUNNING SO MUCH.

Hit the scales for the first time in a week or so this morning. Sixty pounds off in six months, 20% of my body weight. Woot
